trolley lines were good business in early-1900s Morgantown, hauling workers to and from factories in the outlying areas every weekday. Sabraton, once a manufacturing center and an independent town, sat at the end of one of those lines. But trolley operators wanted to run on weekends, too. Jerome Park is named for the destination the West Virginia Traction and Electric Company created on its line to Sabraton to draw riders on Saturdays and Sundays. The refreshment stand and dance pavilion have gone the way of the trolley, but the working class neighborhood that grew up around it remains. Jerome Park housed Italian and African American families early on, and it’s even more diverse today. Residents in these several hundred homes dating to the early- and middle- 1900s enjoy quick access to downtown in one direction and to Interstate 68 in the other. Across Hartman Run Road to the east lies Norwood Addition, subdivided in the early 1900s and home to about 150 families; homes date mostly to the 1940s and 1950s. Lots range from wide lawns with views lower on the hill to wooded stands and privacy higher and farther out, and the entire neighborhood sits high enough to be a quiet remove from busy W.V. Route 7 / Earl Core Road. Eventually annexed by Morgantown, what we know today as Sabraton is mainly the commercial corridor that residential Jerome Park and Norwood Addition lie above. For both neighborhoods, the ballfields, tennis courts, skate park, and swimming pool of Marilla Park are just up the road. Sabraton residents enjoy quick access to two grocery stores: Aldi and Kroger. Hardware and outdoor supplies and other needs can be met on the corridor, too. And dining out is easy, with barbecue, family-style, Chinese, Mexican, and multiple fast food options just minutes away.
