families just starting out can do no better than First Ward. Situated south of downtown between Dorsey Avenue and White Park, First Ward is a relatively affordable near-downtown neighborhood. The farthest homes are a 20-minute walk from the heart of town—but just a few min- utes’ bike ride on the neighborhood’s flat terrain. First Ward’s tidy street grid has a harmonious uniformity: The early- and middle-20th century working-class homes were mostly built in similar styles. Residents enjoy good-sized yards, quiet streets, lots of sidewalks, and great park access. Grassy Jack Roberts Park, at the heart of the neighborhood, has a play- ground, a basketball court, a ballfield, and wide open spaces. It’s a choice spot for July 4 picnics, sparklers, and fireworks. At the far edge of First Ward, forested White Park holds softball fields and five miles of walking and biking trails along- side the Cobun Creek reservoir. And for indoor recreation, the Morgantown Ice Arena, right next door, offers public skates on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Insider tip: A Saturday Mountaineers basketball game clears the rink—it’s a great time to practice your toe loop or work up a spectacular, ice-spraying hockey stop. Want to get a feel for First Ward? Walk the streets—you’re sure to see parents pushing strollers, families at the park, and longtime residents tending their flower gardens. Then check out Mundy’s Place, a beloved longtime neighborhood bar, for great pub food specials like Wing Wednesdays and Fish Fridays.
