HOWYOUTUBE HELPED ME CATCH UP TO THE 21ST CENTURY
My Two New T V Addictions
With the high energy of summer winding down and the first day of fall now behind us, what better time to curl up on the couch and start a new TV show? Every couple weeks, it seems a highly anticipated series or season is released, so it can be difficult to choose what you should watch first. In fact, many people spend 20 minutes casually scrolling through Netflix before deciding to rewatch their favorite sitcoms. Having only started using Netflix last year, I admit I’m fairly late to the game when it comes to online entertainment streaming, and I only recently discovered you can watch actual shows on YouTube. If you’re more caught up on the technology, you might be shaking your head at my recent discovery, but it isn’t as if I didn’t know YouTube existed. I’ve been using it to both upload videos for Janet Davis Cleaners and find answers to “how to” questions for years, but I didn’t realize people used it for much else. Then a couple months ago, I came across an article highlighting the top-10 grossing channels on YouTube. In my skeptical state, I started researching, and that’s when I stumbled upon two YouTube- based shows about cars. I watched two episodes and then four more. When I finally decided to take a break, I realized I was already 20 episodes in! The first YouTube show I really sank my teeth into was “Hoovie’s Garage,” a show which documents the car adventures of
automotive writer Tyler Hoover. Hoover has his own impressive array of 30 cars at this point
example, he is currently rebuilding a Ferrari 460 he found at a salvage auction. The car had some floor damage and a strange engine issue, so he got it for only $20,000. With all his mechanical expertise, he’ll have it fixed and running in no time!
What I like about these shows (besides the cool cars) is that by using YouTube as a platform, viewers realize
(which he aptly refers to as the Hooptie Fleet). When searching for vehicles to add to his fleet, Hoover will often try to find some of the oldest and coolest, but still inexpensive, options. In a recent episode, for example, he bought a rare AMG performance-line Mercedes wagon for $15,000. While this car wasn’t a collectors’ item, only 15 were ever produced, so in the end, he purchased an interesting and unique $130,000 car for far less than it was worth. In Hoover’s collection, you can also find a Rolls Royce Phantom, which he bought for $70,000, and a 14-year- old Lamborghini, which he found with only 4,000 miles on it. The guy even has his own DeLorean! everyday guy who goes to salvage auctions to find cool sports cars that need a little TLC to get them back on the road. Most of the cars he finds have been in accidents, so they have a salvage title, but the value is way too low. He buys the cars cheaply and then takes them to his farm in Florida to fix. For The other channel I watch is called “Samcrac,” and it follows Sam, your

Both Hoover and Sam are constantly buying cars that might seem out of reach for the average person, which proves that good mechanical expertise can go a long way! Plus, while both of these guys have thousands of followers who make sure to catch every episode, they are just normal people who found an innovative way to share their hobby with others. I keep thinking that maybe someday down the road, I’ll start a car-themed YouTube channel of my own. But, since that day is still a long way off, I’ll keep tuning into “Hoovie’s Garage” and “Samcrac” in the meantime. If you enjoy cars as much as I do, I highly recommend you check them out!

EMBRACE CHANGE WITHOUT ERASING HISTORY

As pink-clad products line store shelves this October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, children are bound to be curious. Since they rationalize the world around them with what they already know, kids may ask silly questions like, “Is cancer contagious?” Whether you or a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer or you just feel it’s time to educate your children about the disease, answering questions can be difficult. These tips can help you prepare. ALWAYS TELL THE TRUTH Telling a child that you or a loved one has cancer can be complicated. To start, the American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends giving yourself time after hearing the news of a cancer diagnosis to process this new reality. Two-parent households should tell their children together, while single parents are encouraged to ask an adult with a positive influence on the child’s life to join the conversation. Remember, your child will be experiencing the same emotions as you but in a kid’s body, where hormones and developmental changes are already wreaking havoc. Monitor their emotions and offer them space and opportunities to discuss their feelings with a professional. When it comes to explaining the disease and its consequences, younger children may require fewer details and broader concepts, while older kids may need more comprehensive answers to their questions. A 5-year-old is going to have different concerns than a 16-year-old, so your approach must be different. However, regardless of your child’s age, always tell the truth. FOCUS ON PREVENTION EDUCATION A loved one doesn’t have to be diagnosed with cancer for you to educate your family about the disease and its prevention. Studies have linked prevention efforts, including anti-smoking campaigns and healthy lifestyle programs, to actually preventing cancer. (In fact, half of all cancers can be prevented!) Teach your child about the dangers of tobacco, alcohol, and excessive sun exposure to foster healthy habits and lifestyles. Organizations that host walks, benefits, and other events for cancer prevention and research can be great sources of education for families, too.

After nearly 70 years of operating a dry cleaning business (and serving as a grocery store for another 20 years before that), the building that houses Janet Davis Cleaners has been present for much of our nation’s history, and all the while it gave our family and team members a great place to offer our services to those in the community for many amazing years. But, as it goes with any building housing an active business, especially older ones, it has seen plenty of wear-and-tear. That’s why we recently decided to give our lovely old building a facelift by repainting. Because our building has such a rich history, we tried to strike a balance between making it look modern without erasing its heritage. Just as it goes with any kind of change, whether it’s a personal or professional one, maintaining existing assets while embracing new ones is important. Here at Janet Davis Cleaners, we are excited about our old building’s new aesthetic. INGREDIENTS
• 4 Granny Smith apples • 1/2 cup raw pistachios • 1 1/2 tsp plus 1 cup sugar • 3 tbsp sesame seeds • 2 tbsp white miso, divided
• 4 Popsicle sticks • 2 tbsp light corn syrup • 1/4 cup heavy cream • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
DIRECTIONS
1. Heat oven to 275 F. 2. In a food processor, pulse pistachios and 1 1/2 tsp sugar. Add sesame seeds and 1 tbsp miso, pulsing until miso is fully broken up. Spread evenly on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake for 15–20 minutes and let cool. 3. Meanwhile, insert a Popsicle stick into the center of each apple. 4. In a saucepan, bring corn syrup, 1 cup sugar, and 2 tbsp water to a boil. Boil for 5–7 minutes, swirling infrequently, until caramel is a light amber color. 5. Add cream and salt to caramel, whisking to combine. Transfer to a large mixing bowl and quickly whisk in remaining miso. 6. To assemble, first roll apple in caramel, then in pistachio mixture, before resting on greased baking sheet. 7. Hayrides and Headless Horsemen HALLOWEEN CELEBRATIONS IN SLEEPY HOLLOW
In 1790, a school teacher named Ichabod Crane was riding home alone from a harvest festival in the village of Sleepy Hollow when he encountered a mysterious rider on horseback. Crane, horrified by the horseman’s missing head, turned and ran in the opposite direction. The Headless Horseman gave chase, hurling his own decapitated head at the terrified teacher. Ichabod Crane was never heard from again ... or so goes “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. This story, first published in 1820, has become a Halloween favorite. The legend is so beloved that in 1997, the village of North Tarrytown, New York, where many events of the story take place, officially changed its name to Sleepy Hollow. Today, the town becomes one big Halloween party during the month of October. Sleepy Hollow is home to many historic landmarks, including the Headless Horseman Bridge and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Washington Irving himself was laid to rest. Evening lantern tours of the cemetery are a popular attraction, and Irving isn’t the only spooky celebrity buried there. Fans of the Gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows” will be delighted to enter the crypt of famed vampire Barnabas Collins.
Another highly anticipated stop for many guests is Sleepy Hollow’s premier
annual attraction, Horseman’s Hollow, an experience not for the faint of heart. During the event, the 300-year-old Philipsburg Manor is transformed into a living nightmare, where vampires, witches, ghouls, and undead soldiers lurk in the shadows. They all serve the dreaded Headless Horseman and are determined to make sure guests don’t leave alive! But it’s not all scares in Sleepy Hollow. There’s plenty of Halloween fun for all ages. Sleepy Hollow boasts relaxing hayrides, tours of Irving’s home, live readings of famous Halloween stories, performances of a brand-new musical based on Irving’s spooky tale, and the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, an incredible exhibition of over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins.
If you want a real Halloween experience, you can’t go wrong in Sleepy Hollow. Just be careful not to lose your head!
