Launch of Caribbean Youth Fellowship II Programme On June 28, 2023, the Campus, through its Social Work Training and Research Centre (SWTRC) in partnership with the International Republic Institute (IRI) launched the Caribbean Youth Fellowship II Programme for youths, aged 18-35 in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. This programme is dynamic and geared towards preparing youths for effective leadership through training and exposure to policy development and advocacy, governance structures and analysis, and community engagement initiatives. It focuses on advocacy and activism and serving others within the community while developing self, self-awareness and self-management to improve as a youth leader. Approximately 70 active participants are enrolled in the programme and the project is expected to conclude on November 3, 2023, with all participants presenting their implemented projects. The projected outcome is youth leaders ready for community, national, and international action for social change. Exploring XR, AI, Ed. 4.0 and EON Reality in Education As part of the Campus’ commitment to provide training in virtual reality, two workshops on Exploring XR, AI, Ed. 4.0 , and EON Reality in Education were held from June 26 to 30, 2023. These workshops introduced participants to the exciting world of Extended Reality (XR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Ed. 4.0 and demonstrated the application of EON Reality software in educational settings. Participants were also given the opportunity to use the EON-XR Platform in their own time to gain initial experience in using the various applications in their pedagogical practices.

ST. AUGUSTINE CAMPUS

Celebrating UWI at 75 The main campus at St. Augustine was bedecked with banners celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of The University of the West Indies and commemorative events were well supported. An Artisan pop-up market attracted over 100 student, staff and alumni entrepreneurs; a blood drive in conjunction with the Ministry of Health collected 78 units of blood; and 39 pieces were submitted by staff for an anniversary art competition. Additionally, the anniversary was acknowledged during the anniversary celebrations of the Seismic Research Centre and a royal visit from the African continent. New Deep-Sea Tubeworm Named After UWI Scientist Professor Judith Gobin In March 2023, a new deep-sea tubeworm species, Lamellibrachia judigobini , was named after Professor Judith Gobin, from the Faculty of Science & Technology, honouring her contributions to marine science. Discovered between 2012 to 2014 by an international scientific team, the worm can grow over 1 metre
