After reading a book series titled Animal Rescue , a group of children from Russell Public School were inspired to do their own part and to help animal rescue. As a result, last Friday, March 10, the children presented Kozy Kritters with a substantial amount of money. The project, which started with a couple girls from the KinderCare before and after school program, soon gained in popularity and welcomed new members. Along with the help of Cindy Saucier, one the School Age Educators, a local pet charity group was found. Kozy Kritters is an animal rescue located in Embrun, which accepts companion pets often overlooked by other rescues. The group then decided to hold amuffin fundraiser and started working on signs and posters, which they put up in the hallway. They made donation boxes, folded Kozy Kritters brochures to be handed out and kids, staff and parents baked muffins. On the mornings of January 26 and Feb- ruary 17, the children greeted parents, as- sisted themwith their beverage andmuffin choices, explained what their fundraiser was all about and accepted donations. Fol- lowing the parents’ support and the kids’ enthusiasm, it was agreed that KinderCare would also offer coffee and thenmatch any amount raised.

Last Friday, March 10, the children fromEarly Learning KinderCare Daycare in Russell presented a $541.40 cheque to Kozy Kritters, an Embrun animal rescue. With an emphasis on creativity and col- laboration in a play-based and learning envi- ronment, KinderCare believes that “children learn best by doing”, and this initiative met with their philosophy. The children then invited Rhonda Hart, co-owner of Kozy Kritters , along with her husband Blair, for a presentation regarding their operations. The children followed with

questions and the presentation of their do- nation: $541.40 including the funds matched by KinderCare . The representatives of the non-profit vol- unteer rescue weremoved by the children’s gesture and plan on using the funds raised, among other things, for veterinarian services and medication. Rhonda partners with her daughter Madi-

son, and together they have been volunteer- ing with various animal rescues for over 15 years. “We recognize that there are times when people are unable to continue to care for their pets, often times due to no fault of their own,” explained the owner. “We don’t charge a fee for surrenders or adoptions and we sustain our operation on donations only.”
