29. « “My times are in thy hand” (Psa. 31:15). It is impossible to be submissive and religiously patient if ye stay your thoughts down among the confused rollings and wheels of second causes, as, Oh, the place! Oh, the time! Oh, if this had been, this had not fol lowed! . . . Rather—look up! —Samuel Rutherford. 30. Christian Manliness “And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge” (2 Pet. 1:5). In the midst of abounding temptation, we need a resolute determination to do what is right in the sight of God. It is that that is called Virtue, a steadfast strength of will to choose always the good part, not a common, quality or a universal experience by any means. The possession of this quality will save a man from being a chameleon, caltching the hue of every surrounding. —W. Graham Scroggie. 31. An Indispensable Factor “Without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Heb. 11:6). Faith begins where human hopes and prospects end. Now this faith, the apostle declares, is indispensable in order to please God. No wonder; any thing less is to treat God as if He were unreal and unreliable, and is practical atheism. It is to make His Word less sure than a mere material fact of nature and perception of the senses; it is to trust God less than we trust His works.—A. B. Simpson. DAILY DEVOTIONAL READINGS ["Continued from Page 16] Cast not away thy confidence— He careth for His own! —E. Margaret Clarkson. 25. The Joy of Sacrifice “I will very gladly spend and be spent for you” (2 Cor. 12:15). The delight of sacrifice comes, when of our will, we lay down our life for Jesus Christ. When willing to have Christ spend us as He chooses, without asking why, then, and then alone do we know the true joy of sacrifice. When we do things that count as nothing in the estimate of men, but count every thing In God’s sight, that is delighting in sacrifice.—Helen Hogrife. 20. To Know Him ‘‘That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fel lowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death” (Phil. 3:10). Fruit is never borne by doing; fruit is always borne by dying. —William Culbertson. Let all our employment be to know God; the more one knows Him, the more one desires to know Him. And as knowledge is commonly the measure of love, the deeper and more extensive our knowledge shall be, the ‘ greater will be our love; and if our love of God were great, we should love Him equally in pains and pleasures. —The Practice of the Presence of God 27. The Spirit of Love “Strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith: that ye , . . may . . . know “ the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge” (Eph. 3:16-19). You may be rooted and grounded in this love, and know the love that passeth knowledge—but on one condi tion—you must be strengthened by the Spirit In the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your heart.—A. Murray. 28. Mighty Through God “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds” (2 Cor. 10:4), Although the Holy Ghost uses weak men, He does hot want them to be weak after He chooses and calls them. Although He uses the foolish things to confound the wise, He does not want us to be foolish after He comes to give us His wisdom and grace. He uses the foolishness of preaching, but, not nec essarily, the foolishness of preachers. Like the electric current. . . it is neces sary that it should have a proper con ductor, and a very small wire is better than a very big rope.—A. B, Simpson.
