2025 RETIRING PROGRAM CHAIRS AND AUTHORS
Sanford J. Schlesinger served as the Chair of PLI’s Estate Planning Institute for over 20 years. Sandy is a Founding Partner of Schlesinger Lazetera & Auchincloss LLP. He is a former Adjunct Professor of Law at New York Law School, where he taught estate and gift taxation; former Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Miami Law School; and a former adjunct faculty member at Columbia University School of Law. He has also been elected to the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils Estate Planning Hall of Fame.
Edward J. Smith was a co-author of PLI’s Langer on Practical International Tax Planning from 1998 to 2025. He served as an articles editor for The Tax Lawyer , published by the Tax Section of the American Bar Association, and is a member of the North Carolina State Bar.

Robert P. Taylor served as Co-Chair of PLI’s Intellectual Property Law Institute , and as a speaker on the Antitrust Law Institute for more than 20 years. Bob is the founder and owner of RPT Legal Strategies PC in San Francisco and Palo Alto. He also serves as a Venture Advisor to New Enterprise Associates and as a patent law expert for the National Venture Capital Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a former chair of the Antitrust Section of American Bar Association, and a Lifetime Member of the American Law Institute.
Hon. John L. Weinberg , author of Federal Bail and Detention Handbook , served for over 50 years as United States Magistrate Judge for the Western District of Washington at Seattle, until his retirement in January 2024. After receiving his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School, he served as a law clerk in the state courts in Illinois and in the United States District Court in Seattle, and was in private practice for five years before becoming a magistrate. He is a past president of the National Council of United States Magistrates, served on its Ad Hoc Committee on the Bail Reform Act of 1984, and has lectured nationwide on the Bail Reform Act of 1984.
