In Life’s a Carnival collection themes of love, laughter and curiosity all bubble to the surface, channelled through showstopping technology.
Nic Joly’s latest body of work entitled Life’s a Carnival is a celebration of human existence in all its madness. Themes of love, laughter, mischief, curiosity and exuberance all bubble to the surface, channelled through the peculiar prism of the Joly imagination. Akin to the ubiquitous pirate ship swinging pendulously above the tent tops of any carnival, so does this collection oscillate between light and dark, spotlight and shade, in a stylistic continuation from Nic earlier bodies of work; Light and Dark and Being Human. “My work has always been inspired by the world around me and the theatre of life and, the more I look, the more it becomes clear that we are all on a journey together full of wonder. My past collections Light and Dark and Being Human have primarily shone a torch on the darker side of human nature, tapping into our inner thoughts, hang-ups and insecurities, but this new collection aims to capture the colourful and beautiful carnival of life in its myriad forms.” – Nic Joly Conceptually, the themes and associations one has with a carnival go some way to deciphering Nic’s inimitable outlook on life. Events and emotions viewed through our eyes, to him take on a different guise, as though viewed through funhouse mirrors that amusingly distort their subjects. Ideas collide in his head like bumper cars, and whirl insistently down a never-ending helter skelter before he takes ownership of his creative outpourings and channels them into the work we see before us. No need for sword swallowers, fire eaters or contortionists here though; Nic’s benign parodies give us all the entertainment we need. “Life is a ticket to the greatest show on Earth, so buckle up and let the carnival begin!” – Nic Joly

The concept for this collection has been a year in the making. I have long wanted to add interaction and light to my sculptures. The amount of research, testing, late nights and technology to learn has been a steep learning curve, but one which I have thoroughly enjoyed. Every piece has to have a microcomputer in the back, which has to be programmed and coded to work with the infra-red sensors and nano LED lights. What I have been trying to achieve has never been done before using this technology so I have had to learn from scratch and make up the rules as I go along.

Nic’s artistic career was born in a stained glass and metal workshop in the south of England. He went on to study at the Winchester School of Art before completing private commissions for glass and bronze works. Inspired by the works of Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel, Nic intertwines intense feelings and postulations about society within his intricate sculptures. Placed in their own little universes, Nic’s figurines offer the viewer an intimacy akin to peering through the window of a stranger’s home. Within that glimpse, our own feelings are evoked. He explains: “In my own small way, I strive to create my own worlds to ask and bring to the forefront the dilemmas and questions that we all feel day-to-day, as well as highlight the madness around us.” Nic’s lively figurines are made from wire, paper and clay. Keen to challenge his methods, he has begun to explore the possibilities of nanotechnology and 3D printing for his miniature buildings, which are then intricately carved, primed and patinated. Each of Nic’s pieces is unique and lovingly-crafted. He hopes that each viewer will engage with them in their own special way.
