Regional park project windfall from golf tournament

NÉCROLOGIE OBITUARY

The Sacha’s Park project in L’Orignal is the big winner from the Steve Barton Golf Classic. The July 17 invitational tournament fundraiser in Hawkesbury amassed more than $17,000 to help with buying accessible equipment for a universal-access com- munity park at the Place de La Seigneurie development in L’Orignal dedicated to the memory of Sacha Chenier. Steve Barton of Vankleek Hill organized the tournament in support of the Chénier family. “It’s a great cause,” stated Barton, “and I look forward to visiting Sacha’s Park once it opens.” More than 160 golfers took part in the tournament. Proceeds from the registration fees and other fundraising activities that took place during the day, including a silent auc- tion featuring signed NHLmemorabilia and a road trip to see the Kingston Frontenacs in action, made up the bulk of the money raised during the event. The goal of the Sacha’s Park project is to build a regional community park with playground features which are open and accessible to children who have mobility problems. The Chenier family was inspired to launch the project following a trip to Flo- rida provided for Sacha Chenier through the help of the Make a Wish Foundation. Sacha Chenier, who passed away at age 11 last year due to complications from an epilepsy condition, lived in L’Orignal all his life. Born blind and affected also by cerebral palsy and a type of epilepsy, Sacha Chenier spent most of his life in a wheelchair and required assistance for many ordinary day- to-day activities. In spite of all that, Sacha Chenier has been described as “a happy little boy who loved to be around other children.” He attended École

St-Paul inHawkesbury and hadmany friends who remember his smile and laughter. TheMake aWish trip to Florida included a visit to a universal-access playground. During the golf tournament evening ban- quet, Jacquelyn Chenier, Sacha’s mother, explained the problems that Sacha and other wheelchair-bound children experience with standard playground facilities and how the visit to a universal-access playground showed them the possibilities. “His wheelchair would often get stuck in the sand around the play structures,” she stated, “and there wasn’t usually much for him to do. It (universal-access park) was an eye-opening experience. We saw that a playground could be built in a way that offered something to all children, re-

gardless of ability. Our hope is that, someday, playgrounds like this will be the norm and not the exception for communities.” The Chenier family has purchased a site for the proposed park and is working with the support of Champlain Township on finding funding sources for the project, including aid for equipment purchasing. Fundraising efforts for the Sacha’s Park project continue this month with a customer appreciation barbecue August 12 at the Herb’s Travel Plaza on Highway 417 south of Vankleek Hill. More information on the Sacha’s Park project is available online at www.gofundme. com/EveryoneCanPlay. “Sacha’s Park will be a step in the right direction,” stated Jacquelyn Chenier. “It will truly be a place where everyone can play.”
