Issachar Gen. 49 :14

The name Nathan means “ given of God.” God gave him to the nation of Israel and particularly to David to be a faithful messenger from heaven with sad news. God’s servants do not always car ry happy tidings. They are “ministers of life unto life” or of “ death unto death.” Their work is to tell the story as God gives it to them whether it be good or bad. In the Bible each person’s name has a meaning. The study of these meanings is most profitable and interesting. His name means “born in captivity.” He was one of God’s great men from whose life many lessons may be learned. The book of Haggai and part of Zecha- riah is devoted to the experiences of this great man. His public life began at an altar where he took care of the sin question first (Ezra 3:2). Afterward he heard God’s wonderful message of vic tory in Zechariah 4:6. Then he was pro moted to be governor in Haggai 1:1 and received a notable position in Zechariah 4:7-14. What a man! Asher Deut. 33:24 His name means “ happy.” He was called to be a blessing to many. Moses wanted more like him. Although he was a murderer in heart and intended to kill Joseph, he afterwards repented, con fessed, and accepted Joseph as his lord. Thus his sin was blotted out and he be came one who was a type in many ways of the devoted, consecrated Christian. His feet were fitted with proper shoes for the rough journey.- He was in happy fellowship with all his brethren. He be came, indeed, God’s man. N O V E M B E R , I 9 4 9 Zerubbabel Matt. 1:12

His name means “ he is wages.” He was called to be a burden bearer. He is a type of Christ and also of the devoted Christian. He had two burdens: one for the glory of God—the other for the bless ing of his fellow men. He realized the value of rest and enjoyed it himself by becoming a burden bearer for others. He saw that the place where he dwelt was delightful and he was contented with his lot. He found that by carrying the load for others he brought rest to them and rest to himself. Benjamin Deut. 33:12 His name means “ the son of the right hand.” He was called to be a type of fellowship with God. The verse tells us that the Lord loved him in a special way and that he would be perfectly safe in the Lord’s keeping. The Lord would pro tect him as the mother hen protects her chicks. He would rest between the Lord’s shoulders as the Indian papoose rests on its mother’s back. No matter how long the journey nor how rough the road, the little one between the shoulders enjoys rest and peace. What an example!

Names in the New Testament also have a meaning. Onesimus means “ prof itable.” This runaway slave was called to be profitable to Paul and to Philemon after he became a believer in Jesus Christ. Wasted lives become useful and fruitful when they are touched by the Lord. Onesimus ran away from his mas ter but he met another Master through
