THE POWER OF MUSIC CAN GIVE YOU A SENSE OF BELONGING
Music is very special because it can connect people from all walks of life. It gives you something to relate to and empathize with. You get a sense that you’re not alone and a feeling of belonging — a community. Music has been in my life ever since I was little. The most influential band for me is the Beatles. I still remember the day I saw the Beatles play on my television. It was February 1964 when I saw themplay live, and that’s whenmy appreciation formusic began. I’ve been asked what my all-time favorite song is, but I don’t think I have one. It’s hard for me to choose because I enjoy and appreciate all kinds of music. From classical to classic rock, jazz, and blues — I love it all! However, I gravitate toward songs that excite me when listening to music. This excitement comes mainly from guitars. I love listening to the different notes guitarists can play in a song. People can either make their guitars sound like vocal melodies or musically add more sound and structure to the song. My favorite guitarist of all time is Stevie Ray Vaughan. He’s best known as the guitarist and front man of the blues-rock trio Stevie RayVaughan and Double Trouble. I got the opportunity to see him live back when I was still in law school before his first album came out. He was such a fantastic guitar player, and I will never forget seeing his live show. I’ve been asked what my all-time favorite song is, but I don’t think I have one. It’s hard for me to choose because I enjoy and appreciate all kinds of music. From classical to classic rock, jazz, and blues — I love it all!
Speaking of live performances, the first concert I went to was Jethro Tull when I was 16, and that’s when I became a
huge fan of live shows. Although I didn’t go to many when I was younger, I try to go to as many concerts now that I’m older and can afford them. There’s something about live music that’s special. When you
see a band perform in person, the music sounds raw and real — if theymess up, you’ll hear it. It’s not like listening to them on a record since they have several chances to play the songs repeatedly until they’re perfect. But live, they only get one chance, which makes live performances exciting. You get to see the band’s musicianship when they perform live because you see them play in person. As many bands and artists know, having a relationship with your fans is essential. Playing live also helps build a connection with their audience — they’re performing for us and only us. I have a few lined up that I’m excited about. I will be seeing Earth, Wind, and Fire and Paul McCartney in the near future, and I’ve held onto these tickets for quite some time. There are many benefits to listening to music. It can help you feel better when times are tough; it can give you a sense of community and make you feel better. Because of the amazing benefits of music, June 21 is World Music
Day. This day celebrates the power music can have on the listener. So, take this opportunity to listen to songs that make you happy.

How to Beat Your Afternoon Slump NO CAFFEINE NEEDED We all know the feeling: Sometime after lunch, you become sluggish, spacy, and unproductive. Many of us instinctively turn to caffeine to power through the rest of the day, but that can cause another crash, not to mention sleep problems. But don’t worry — you aren’t doomed to an aimless afternoon. We’ve compiled expert tips to perk up and carry on with your busy day. Plan your work. All of our bodies have internal rhythms, and by now, you probably knowyours. Typically, people peak mid-morning or in the late afternoon. But whenever your productive heights are, plan around them. Complete the detailed, creative, or difficult work during the times when your energy is at its best, and save your “busy work” or repetitive tasks for the lulls when you feel less motivated. You’ll feel better and get more done. Consume healthy foods and lots of water. Maybe you don’t have complete control of your schedule. That’s where a healthy snack comes in. We tend to crash in the afternoon when our blood sugar drops, usually due to consuming carbohydrates. Eating vegetables, fruit, and protein or fiber-rich foods will help pick up your energy without incurring a future dip. While you’re snacking, drink some water. A 2018 study out of Yale found that even mild dehydration can negatively affect our brains’ ability to function, so don’t let your water bottle sit untouched.
Get up and move. You’re not going to get over that slump by sitting in your chair. If you want to beat back fatigue, go for a walk, climb some stairs, stretch, or do some jumping jacks. Researchers have proven that exercise wakes up both your body and your mind. In fact, science says it will do a better job of rousing you than caffeine will. Best of all, it will help, not hurt, your ability to sleep at night. Finally, set yourself up for success by going to bed at a reasonable hour and getting your necessary 7–9 hours of sleep. Our attention ebbs and flows naturally, so none of us can be our best 100% of the time. But along with these other tips, staying well-rested can help you pick up the pace.
Are You Facing Your Second DWI? HERE ARE THE PENALTIES YOU COULD FACE
When you receive your first DWI charge in Texas, you may be able to seal it, which prevents government agencies from disclosing information to the public. But if you get your second DWI, the penalties are more severe. Here’s what you need to know about second DWI charges and how they can affect you.
3. Probation: Although probation isn’t the ideal outcome, it’s still an option. If you find yourself on probation because of a second DWI, you will be on probation for a couple of years and follow the secondary punishments that go along with probation. 4. Secondary Punishments: You may have to attend alcohol education courses to educate you on the dangers alcohol consumption may have on you and others around you. You could be required to install an interlock on your car, which will connect to your car’s ignition system. This device makes you breathe into the equipment, and if your blood alcohol level (BAC) is outside of the required range, your car won’t start. Your license could also be suspended for two years.
The Penalties? A second DWI is not a felony; instead, it’s classified as a Class A misdemeanor. There are five different penalties you could get that are more severe.
5. Permanent Charge: You will not be able to have your second DWI charge sealed or deferred.
1. Fines: DWI fines double from $2,000 to $4,000 for a second offense.
If you find yourself arrested for your second DWI, you will need the help of an experienced attorney as soon as possible. Allow your friends at Medlin Law Firm to assist you during your time of need. We can take a look at your case and see what we can do to help.
2. Jail Time: There is a mandatory three-day jail sentence for your second DWI. The punishment for a second offense ranges from a month to a year, which is twice as long as the maximum sentence for your first offense.

war, they craved doughnuts more and more. Thus, the fried sugary treat began to thrive in America. Why are there holes? This is a debate that has been going on for years. Some say there is a hole in the middle to help ease digestion. Others say it was to save on ingredients. But the most popular theory comes from the 1800s when New England ship captain, Hanson Gregory, was upset that his doughnuts were unevenly cooked. He suggested having a hole in the middle of the dough for it to cook better — in fact, this method is valid!
America is known as a melting pot.
Every culture has some form of a fried dough dish. This makes it difficult to determine where doughnuts originated from because both British and Dutch cultures began creating fried dough treats around the same time. But the U.S.’s origins with doughnuts date back to the 1700s with the Dutch’s olykoek (oil cake). This traditional dish inspired America, but it wasn’t until the early 19th century that doughnuts were mentioned in American cookbooks.
Who knew there was so much history about America’s most delicious snack? We hope you enjoyed this sweet history lesson! This month, celebrate National Doughnut Weekend by biting into a sugary and tasty treat.
This began duringWorldWar I. The tasty treat didn’t gain popularity until WWI, when the French’s Salvation Army served doughnuts to the American militarymen who

4. Don’t Ignore Anxiety
3 TIPS THAT CAN HELP YOU DealingWithWork Anxiety?
Practice Self-Care
There has been an increasing amount of people who experience anxiety at their place of work. In 2018, Wrike, a tech company, released a surveywhich found that 68% of people feel anxious while at work. Here are a few tips to help decrease the amount of anxiety you may feel in your work environment. Don’t Suppress Your Anxiety Instead of pushing away your anxiety, allow it in and practice acceptance. If you try to ignore the way you’re feeling, those emotions can bottle up inside and make you feel overwhelmed. Instead, you can acknowledge why you may be feeling anxious, process those emotions, and then carry on with the rest of your day. It’s all about your mindset and how you look at the situation —will you let it positively or negatively impact your day? Ask for Help Work can become hectic and busy, and it can be easy to say yes to something even if you have a busy workload. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need to; it will provide the clarification you need and remove some of your stress. It can be hard to ask for help, but communicating with your superiors shows that you genuinely care about excelling.
Sometimes all we need is to focus on ourselves. Don’t forget to take care of yourself and attend to your feelings. You don’t want to change how you live and limit yourself from doing other activities. Take time to pamper yourself and live life to the fullest. If you continue doing what brings you joy, that feeling will follow you while you’re at work. Work can be stressful — and that’s okay. Everyone feels stress and anxiety in their lives; what matters is how you deal with it. This may take some time, but with dedication and practice, you’ll find yourself less anxious while at work — and in every other part of your life as well.
