Falcons rule on court

But, like all my seniors on the team, they’re committed to working hard.” Stoqua also noted that he has tried to get the Falcons signed up for as many exhibi- tion games and weekend tournaments as possible during the season to provide them with more game time to sharpen their skills. SFX goes up against St. Thomas Aquinas of Russell in a final home match Feb. 5 in Hammond. The seniors have their match against the Ravens at 1 p.m., followed by the juniors at 2:30 p.m. The Falcons senior boys have gone up against the Ravens during a tournament in North Dundas and beat the Russell team by 11 points. “They’re a good outside shooting team,” Stoqua said.

HAMMOND | The Falcons rule the skies in league high school basketball so far this season. St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School (SFX) sits at five-and-zero in the Prescott- Russell senior boys standings with one league game left to play early next month before the finals. Coach Scott Stoqua has a simple explanation for the team’s success. “Hard work,” he said. “We have four new starters this year. These four guys had to learn all of our new system, and two of them have never played basketball before.

Ontario sports fund open for applications

TORONTO | The Nation Municipality ben- efited from it and now other communities in Prescott-Russell have a chance at help from a provincial recreation fund. The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport is accepting applications for grants this year from the Ontario Sport and Recre- ation Communities Fund (OSRC). The fund helps local, regional and pro- vincial sports and recreation groups with their projects and programs. The aim is to increase opportunities for healthy activi- ties for people of all ages and abilities. The fund also helps support training for volun-

teer coaches and other officials needed for some community sports. Last year the OSRC provided grants for 150 community sports and recreation pro- grams throughout Ontario. In the Glen- garry-Prescott-Russell riding The Nation municipality’s Volunteer Training for Minor Hockey Program received a grant to help with providing qualified coaches and train- ers for the local minor hockey association. Deadline for OSRC applications this year is Feb. 20. For details go to http://www.grants. gov.on.ca/GrantsPortal/en/OntarioGrants/ GrantOpportunities/PRDR006918.

The kids really got into the swing of things on the mats in the gymnasium at École Ste-Trinité in Rockland over the January 26 weekend. Five dojos from across Eastern and Southern Ontario sent teams for Rockland’s Bluewater Martial Arts Academy’s invitational Friendly Kids Charity Open Tournament. This year’s event was a fund- raiser for Bluewater dojo’s Maxime Alarie, who is taking part in a Mission to Mexico project where local youth help out at an orphanage in that country. The tournament raised about $1300 to assist Alarie with his travel expenses for the mission.
