PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROFES IONAL DEVELOPMENT

very applicable to what I do in construction. One thing I learned is to approach negotiations with an open mind—to not assume or have pre- conceived notions about what the other party wants to get out of the contract or negotiation. A lot of sessions were more life skills, not necessarily technical, and they were very interesting and thought provoking, which was the biggest value for me. I really enjoyed the sessions with audience participation—it gets you out of your comfort zone, away from your regular day-to-day duties. Of course, the conference is a great way to meet your CPD requirement. But it’s also nice to get out and meet fellow professionals, learn what they’re doing in other industries, and see what interests they have.

It’s nice to get out of my regular role in the construction industry, to meet other APEGA members, and to explore the latest cutting-edge topics. One session I attended was Advanced Negotiation Skills, which is

SHIVA ESLAMI, P.ENG. Calgary

I decided to attend the sessions and also sign up as a volunteer host for one of the professional development sessions. I want to get more involved in APEGA events, to increase my knowledge of engineering rules, standards, and guidelines, so I can be a better professional engineer. I was impressed with the variety of topics to

choose from—APEGA brought in really informed, interesting speakers to help us grow as professionals, and to practise our tasks more effectively and efficiently. A session I found very interesting was Enforcement and You, which examined the responsibilities, challenges, and processes of APEGA’s compliance duties and how they relate to my own work. Before this, I wasn’t aware of the role in upholding protected titles for engineers and geoscientists. Some companies will give the title of engineer or geoscientist to people who are not licensed. I learned to be more careful about which companies I work with, to ensure they’re in compliance with the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act , and I learned to report non-compliance to APEGA.
