Summer 2019 PEG

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROFE SIONAL DEVELOPMENT

KAREN SAGAR, P.ENG. Calgary

I’m the former vice-president of the Alberta Women’s Science Network. We had a table at the exhibition hall, so I decided to attend some PD sessions as well. One of the sessions I quite enjoyed was the one on geoethics. It was a very lively, interesting presentation, talking about the differences between the Geoethical Promise and the APEGA Code of Ethics . It was a really good, quality session—there were some animated discussions and a lot of food for thought. Obviously, companies must balance the cost-benefit for professional development, but the sessions today were really beneficial for me. And it was a great opportunity to network with other members of my profession. CPD is something we’re all required to do as members, but I think it’s more than just an obligation. As a practising professional, I think it’s important to keep up-to-date with current topics and trends, and APEGA PD is a great way to do that.

MOHAMMED QUADIR, P.ENG. Calgary

What interested me were the variety of topics offered and the networking opportunities. Attending the conference is a great way to meet fellow professionals and get to know people in other disciplines and industries. It’s also a great way for me to stay engaged with my professional association and support self-regulation, which is especially important because I am a member-at-large for the APEGA Calgary Branch. I encourage my colleagues to attend professional development sessions like this. It’s a great opportunity to help you take your professional skills to the next level. The sessions I attended helped me gain a better understanding of industry trends and find out how to apply engineering theories in real life. Everybody can always learn something new outside their own discipline and their own field of work. It’s always exciting to expand your skills and learn something new.
