United Way campaign well underway gŏđŏ

“One of our events is the Super Hero Chal- lenge to signify that anyone can be a hero when it comes to helping their community,” explained Densmore.“We have approached schools and businesses to raise money for the cause. When a goal is reached, the prin- cipal or business manager or owner will dress up like a super hero for a day. It’s a fun way to raise money and bring awareness to a good cause.” UWCPR raises money to help 13 organiza- tions in the community, which in turn help the community in a number of ways, from mental health to safety and nutrition and everything in between.

HAWKESBURY | The UnitedWay-Centraide of Prescott-Russell (UWCPR) is in business to make communities stronger. “The stronger we get, the stronger the community gets,”said Jodie Densmore, exe- cutive director of UWCPR. “That is why I am doing this job. That is what we are here for.” The UWCPR annual campaign began in September with a goal of raising $250,000. The campaign runs until the end of Decem- ber; however, donations are accepted year round.

Jodie Densmore, executive director of United Way of Prescott-Russell, is very passionate about the community she lives in and being able to help those in need. Some of the programs UWCPR is involved in include the Breakfast program in local schools. “We encourage kids to take food from the breakfast program to normalize it for those who really need it and remove the stigma,” expressed Densmore. “I’d rather feed them all than have some go hungry.” Other programs that bene"t from dona- tions include social and emotional sup- port, talks on stress management, bullying and suicide at high schools, healthy rela- tionships, literacy, advocacy and in-home care for people with disabilities, food banks, shelter and support for women and child- ren $eeing abuse, summer camps for at-risk youths, after school programs, and family centers. “Our services reached 39,000 people in the area last year,” said Densmore. “In a population of 85,000, those are signi"cant statistics.” We need champions” The UWCPR is run mostly by volunteers with the exception of Densmore. However, there are not a lot of volunteers available to help out at the moment. “What we need are champions in the community who will donate their time and promote what we do,” suggested Dens- more. “We need volunteers in order to help those who need it.” Some 99.25 per cent of funds raised by UWCPR go back into the community. “We use a local web hoster and our pamphlets are printed here,” described Densmore. “Everything goes back into the commu- nity.” The remaining 0.75 per cent goes to the Canadian United Way-Centraide for use of the logo, guidelines, and an established donation ratio. Donations are collected by UWCPR and then distributed to organizations in need by way of grants. Organizations must be a registered charity and be located in Pres- cott-Russell. “Giving to the United Way ensures that donations go to where they are needed and where they will have the greatest impact,” claimed Densmore. “Fun- draising allows us to put the money where it is needed most, and frees the organiza- tions to do what they are best at, helping those in need.” A list of agencies bene"ting from UWCPR donations is available at www.unitedway- pr.ca.
