ALLENTOWN, PA — A modestly-sized play yard of  a downtownAllentown preschool, direct- ly across the street from the under-construction 272-million dollar hockey arena envisioned to promote regional economic growth, is achieving a wide range of objectives thanks to the Com- mercial Real Estate Women of the Lehigh Valley (CREW LV). Grace Montessori School is a non-profit inner- city program that engages about 90 children, age three to five, in active learning. School leadership had been contemplating installing a painted labyrinth on the playground, wishing to make the design an integral part of the school, its cur- riculum and mission. CREW LV transformed the wish into a living reality this spring in celebration of Greenbuild, the largest sustainability conference and expo in the US.  Greenbuild will be presented by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) in Phila- delphia in the fall, attracting more than 30,000 professionals of the green building industry. The local chapter of the USGBC, the Delaware Valley Green Building Council (DVGBC), challenged all organizations and companies within the region to make a pledge in preparation for the conference. The Montessori project is CREW LV’s response to the challenge. Rosalin Petrucci, a founding member of CREW LV and an executive with the J.G. Petrucci Com- pany, connected CREW with Grace Montessori School and a team went into action. Joanne Kostecky, principal of Joanne Kostecky Garden Designs, Allentown, PA designed the labyrinth on a pro bono basis using planting and pav- ers to transform the small play yard. Christa Kraftician, AIA, LEED AP, president elect of CREW LV and principal of Spillman Farmer Architects, Bethlehem, spearheaded the effort to solicit donations and organize a series of Sat- urday morning work parties. Over 200 volunteer hours were devoted to achieving the project, the majority provided by CREW members and their professional associates. Special thanks go to: J.G. Petrucci Company for donating herb plants and pavers; Holmes Cunningham Engineering for the design of the erosion control plan; Pennoni Associates for con- struction stake out; Boyle Construction for layout of paving stones; Ondra Huyett Construction for construction assistance; Estate Maintenance for equipment and professional staff; Plantique for mulch; and Valley View Landscaping for soil. Fi- nancial assistance was provided by: Allied Barton Security Services; Team Capital Bank; Spillman FarmerArchitects; LafayetteAmbassador Bank; Buckno Lisicky & Company; Plunkett & Graver, PC; Regan, Levin, Bloss, Brown & Savachak, PC; PPL; and Liberty Property Trust.

The school is housed on the street level of a parking garage.

Work parties of volunteers reported on Saturday mornings from late March into May.

When the plants mature they will be as tall as the children. Allentown’s 272-million-dollar hockey arena can be seen under construction.
