The VOP may require a medical certificate or other documentation acceptable to the department director and/or Human Resources in support of sick leaves extending more than five consecutive workdays, or more than three days intermittently in a 14-day period. Such absence may also be subject to the provisions of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993.

Use of Sick Leave To receive pay for sick leave, you must advise your supervisor at least one hour prior to the time you are scheduled to report for duty. If your department has other call-in requirements, you will be responsible for complying with the policy of your department. Consideration will be given to emergency situations on a case-by-case basis. Your supervisor may use his or her discretion in approving sick leave and may request verification of the reason for the absence. Refer to the Absenteeism and Tardiness policy for additional details. Employees are requested to schedule doctors’ appointments outside of their regularly scheduled work hours. If that is not possible and you need to leave work for an appointment, you should arrange time off with your supervisor and return to work following the appointment if possible. Sick leave cannot be used during an employee’s voluntary termination notice period. Sick time taken during a notice period will be time off without pay. Appropriate notice is:
