Sweet sugar has been in this sack, but the sack can hinder the growth of the balloon, just as certain things which may appear harmless can hinder the growth of the child of God. Next, we will put the balloon in the clear jar. As soon as it reaches the sides of the jar,, it stops growing. Often we hear people say, "I do not see any harm in this or that form of amuse ment.” We need to remember that if anything keeps us from growing spirit ually, it is wrong for us to dd it. We will blow the balloon up outside the sacks and the jar. It is really very pretty now. The" Christian, who refuses all things which hinder his spiritual growth will some day hear the Lord Jesus say, “Well done.” m Outline and Exposition I. T he P reaching of J ohn (1-6) ’ UKE very carefully identifies the time (vs. 1, 2) by naming all the officials who were then in office, revealing how painstaking h6' was ip his account. Incidentally, he con demns both the Roman officials and the -Jewish hierarchy by putting them in their position of being acquainted with, ' all things that had transpired; they needed not to have been blind to the facts of who Christ was. Only willful rebellion against God caused them to do what they did with Jesus. His ministry was a matter of public notice, as was that of 'John, the Baptist, His famous forerunner, who was heard in “all the country about Judea.” “The word of God came unto John”— this was a manifestation of grace. There was no other way by which that Word could come to any human being.

JANUARY 18, 1942 JOHN THE BAPTIST AND JESUS M atthew 3:1-17; M ark 1:1-11; L uke 3:1-22

Luke 3:1 Now In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrareh of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrareh of Iturea and of the region of Trachonitis. and Lysanfas the tetrareh of Abilene, 2 Annas arid Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharlas in the wilderness, 3 And he came Into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins: 4 As it is written In the book of thé words ot Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying In the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, maÿe his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made Straight, and the rough ways shall bjt made smooth; 6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God* 15 And as the people were in expecta tion, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; 16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to un loose: he shall baptize you with the, Holy Ghost and with fire* 17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. 21 Now when all the people were bap tized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him* and a voice came from heaven, which said.
