ters of great doctrinal Importance. The place of the Temptation in relation to Christian doctrine is not always seen clearly. But think now of the important things to which the record bears wit ness unmistakably: First, the Tempta tion bears witness to the reality and existence of a personal devil. Second, the Temptation proves the genuineness of the humanity of our Lord. If He had not been true man, the entire af fair would have been merely a bit of play-acting on the part of deity which cannot be tempted. Third, the Tempta tion bears clear witness to the sinless nature of our Lord. In the case of sin ners, they need not be taken into the presence of Satan to be tested with temptation. “Every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust” (Jas. 1:14). But in our Lord’s case, there was no inner nature which was evil in its promptings. Temptation, for Him, had to come wholly from the outside, from another source, as it did. Fourth, the Temptation bears strong testimony to the inspiration of Holy Scripture. In His hour of trial, when a single failure would have destroyed the moral foundations of the throne of God and nullified the whole plan of salva tion, we find the Son of God resting for His strength and defense on the written Word of God. And the point receives added force when we note that all three of His quotations were taken from the Book of Deuteronomy, a book which the destructive critics have pro nounced a forgery from the hand of an imposter. Yet in the most solemn hour of His life on earth, our Lord leans im plicitly upon its statements. Fifth, the Temptation implies clearly that the kingdoms of this present world with all their glory are in the hands of Satan by the permissive will of God. Any other view turns the third temptation into a mere mental delusion. They tell us that, in some trackless lands, when one friend passes through the pathless forests, he breaks a twig ever and anon as he goes, that those who come after may see the traces of his having been there, and may know that they are not out of the road. Oh! when we are journeying through the murky night, and the dark woods of affliction and sorrow, it is something to find here and there a spray broken, or a leafy stem bent down with the tread of His foot and the brush of His hand as He passed; and to remember that the path He trod He has hallowed, and that there are lingering fragrances and hidden strengths in the remem brance, “in all points tempted like as we are,” bearing grief for us, bearing grief with us, bearing grief like us.— J.
