PATRICK SARSFIELD

When the spotlight was on her, she shone like a candle.

My short story takes the form of a monologue and from the title the reader should infer that the narrative is written as a school essay. ‘The Person I Admire The Most’ examines the relationship between mother and son, but also aims to spotlight the innocence of childhood through the main character’s blind loyalty to his parent despite her neglect. An important device is the irony of the boy’s mother’s role within a children’s charity juxtaposed with the neglect of her own child; this tension comes to a climax during the gala dinner. My story favours the tabula rasa theory and challenges the notion of original sin.
