THE PERSON I ADMIRE THE MOST

My mother is the head of a children’s charity. She raises hundreds of thousands of pounds each year, to help children here in Britain as well as children in foreign places like Africa and America. The money buys medicine and food and helps build new houses and hospitals. I helped her when she wanted a new logo. She showed me pictures and I had to choose my favourite. I chose a purple circle with the charity’s name inside. As soon as I told her, she went off to telephone a man called Joe, who is her press manager. A week later, the logo was on the official papers and telly adverts. It makes me happy when I see it because I know that it’s my contribution. Six months ago, Mum went to Kenya for four weeks. She had to go because they were building a new school, and she wanted to help and oversee the building. When she was there, the BBC made a documentary about the school and the charity. I haven’t seen it yet. Mum says they are still editing it. I wanted to go with her to the new school, but she said I couldn’t. Whenever Mum is on TV I try to watch her. She is on the news sometimes. I don’t usually watch the news. I can’t really understand most of what they say, and there is never good news, but if Mum is on, I always watch. She goes on every time there is a big fund-raising drive for her charity and sometimes if there are stories about poor children on the news. She gives a human angle to the stories. Once, she had to go to the studio straight from the airport. Dad said that, as a treat, we could go and surprise her by going to see her at Television Centre. We met her as she went in. She smiled but she seemed nervous and didn’t talk to us much. A comedian
