May 2026

“This first year is about listening, learning, and setting a solid foundation, while also identifying early opportunities where we can demonstrate impact and build confidence in this new, collaborative model.”

What do you love most about Brookings and why? What I love most about Brookings is the people. There is a genuine sense of welcome here—people are open, engaged, and invested in the success of the community. That spirit creates an environment where relationships form quickly and collaboration comes naturally. I’m also impressed by the level of innovation across the region, from local businesses to partnerships with South Dakota State University . Equally important is the strong sense of community pride. People care deeply about this place and take ownership in shaping its future. When you combine that welcoming culture, innovative thinking, and pride in the community, it’s clear that Brookings has a strong foundation to build on for continued success. What does a perfect day spent in Brookings look like for you? In the summer, a perfect day starts with a bike ride along the community’s trail system, followed by a stop at one of Brookings’ great local coffee shops. From there, I’d spend time exploring downtown, visiting the Farmers’ Market , and enjoying lunch at one of the many local restaurants. It’s a great mix of activity and connection—and any day is perfect that includes cheering on the SDSU Jackrabbits . Why is this merger important? Why now? One of the most important things to understand is the formation of the Growth Alliance reflects the community’s forward-thinking mindset. This wasn’t change for the sake of change—it was a deliberate decision to better align efforts, maximize resources, and create a more impactful, unified approach to growth. That level of intentionality speaks to the leadership and vision within Brookings. What is something cool about the area that a lot of people might not know about? One of the things that really stands out is the quality and accessibility of outdoor recreation. Spaces like Dakota Nature Park and McCrory Gardens , along with the extensive park and trail system, offer incredible opportunities to enjoy the outdoors year-round. Beyond that, what may surprise people is the variety of activities available in town. Whether your interests are in arts and culture, athletics, outdoor recreation, or community events, there’s truly something here for everyone. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT GROWTHALLIANCE.ORG+

On April 2, the community welcomed CEO of the Brookings Regional Growth Alliance Lori Frederick at the Taste of Brookings event. This was not only a chance to meet the new CEO, but to premiere the large merger and organization. Aligning with goal seven of the Economic Development Master Plan recommended to the Brookings City Council in 2023, four organizations consolidated in January 2026 to create the new Growth Alliance: the Brookings Economic Development Corporation , the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce , Downtown Brookings, Inc ., and Visit Brookings . “The creation of the Growth Alliance was driven by a shared vision from community members who recognized an opportunity to be more intentional and impactful in how we support growth,” said Frederick. “There was a vision that by aligning efforts, we could better leverage resources, reduce duplication, and create a stronger, more unified approach to advancing the community.” Rather than operating independently, the goal was to integrate efforts around economic development, community development, and destination development to maximize outcomes. “My career has been rooted in business ownership, economic development, and community building, and I’ve always been drawn to work that brings people together around a shared vision for advancement,” said Frederick. Frederick, who is originally from Mission, has over 14 years of experience in economic development, including work with the Deadwood-Lead Economic Development Corporation , as well as the South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Elevate Rapid City . “I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with business leaders, community partners, and local stakeholders to support business expansion, strengthen communities, and position regions for long-term success,” said Frederick. “What I’ve valued most is being part of efforts that align priorities and turn ideas into meaningful, visible progress.” Learn more about the CEO and what’s going on in Brookings.
