You can’t predict what’ll happen on the road. But you can be prepared. A helmet, leathers, boots and gloves will protect you when the ride gets rough.

YOUR B est HEALTH STARTS WITH A WELLNESS VISIT
Life is busy. For all the things that matter most, take the time to check on you. Annual wellness visits monitor and support your long-term health. They also serve as the foundation for building a relationship with a primary care provider. “These visits give us dedicated time to talk about your health, lifestyle and habits, instead of focusing on treating an illness or injury,” said Muna Ashraf, MD, a family medicine provider at Sanford 4th and Sycamore Family Medicine.
By getting to know you and your health needs, a provider can then offer highly personalized care and guidance to help you reach your best overall health.
“Preventive care is essential when we are feeling well because chronic conditions are often silent for years,” said Dr. Ashraf. “We are able to not only mitigate risk factors but also intervene before small issues develop into serious health problems.” During a wellness visit, a provider reviews your medical and family history, assesses your physical health, screens for behavioral health concerns, addresses any questions you have and helps you stay up to date on preventive care. “It’s important not to skip annual wellness visits, particularly as we age, because our risk of chronic diseases increases,” said Dr. Ashraf.

PREVENTIVE CARE CHECKLIST Your provider will recommend
WHEN IT COMES TO your NO QUESTION IS TOO SMALL
HEALTH,
different types of preventive care and a screening schedule based on your individual risk factors, such as your age and health history. PREVENTIVE CARE YOU MAY NEED:
IN YOUR 20s AND 30s Cervical cancer screenings Cholesterol screenings Vaccinations
Anything that feels new or different is worth talking about during your wellness visit. You know your body better than anyone, which means you know when something doesn’t feel right. And no question about your health is too small or too sensitive to address. TO PREPARE FOR YOUR VISIT, WRITE DOWN ANY QUESTIONS YOU HAVE SO YOU REMEMBER TO DISCUSS THEM, SUCH AS: Why are my feet tingling? Why can’t I fall asleep?
IN YOUR 40s AND 50s Blood pressure checks Cervical cancer screenings Cholesterol screenings Colorectal cancer screenings Heart and vascular screenings Lung cancer screenings Mammograms Prostate cancer screenings Vaccinations
What can I do for weight loss? What are these rashes from?
Annual wellness visits are covered by most insurance plans.
You should also bring a list of all prescribed and over-the-counter medications or supplements you take and how much you take of each. If you’re seeing a provider at Sanford Health for the first time, bring a copy of your medical records.

Chuck Bennis Meet the Creative
For Chuck Bennis , a hobby turned into a legitimate business.
“Whether it's illustrations or large scale work, it’s about making that connection,” said Bennis, who resides in Brookings. The popular South Dakota artist specializes in digital illustrations and caricatures, but is widely known for his mural work—many in notable locations like all three stairwells in the Washington Pavilion Kirby Science Discovery Center in Sioux Falls.
When talking with Bennis, his passion for restoration is prominent.
Written by Alana Snyder & Photos by Alana Snyder and Kayla Johnson “Any public art brings communities together,” he stated. “I love history and telling the past of whatever speaks—whether it's the history, town, or backstory of the spot, person, or something.” “I'm a real lover of the restoration project process—making something that was otherwise dingy, forgotten, and old into something fresh, new, and a focal point,” he said. “A neglected dirty wall or unassuming alley that no one can either avoid or isn't a highlight is eye catching to me.” Bennis says adding some art, creativity, and interest to something in a short period of time can totally transform it into a unique and beautiful thing. It also can create local comradery.

ART + DESIGN
Originally from Brandon, Bennis and his family moved to Brookings in 2014 after much debate. Their decision came from a mix of the small town feel, their love of South Dakota State University , and the town’s support for the arts. One of Bennis’s favorite murals is a piece downtown by Nick’s Hamburger Shop . The hot spot to grab a burger and shake has been around since 1929, and the muralist wanted to commemorate the historical landmark on the corner of Main Avenue and 5th Street. “Hamburgers have been sold in that spot for almost 100 years—it's a really important place to Brookings,” said Bennis. “The alley lent itself as a site for people to take a picture and to highlight Nick’s. It's also a silly, huge hamburger, so it's just fun.” Find out more about Bennis Art Studios and why he loves art and his community. A lot of my pieces are... in the region around Brookings and Sioux Falls. I love requests from organizations that benefit the community. It brings me joy that nearly every place my kids frequent either has a Bennis mural or can get one (church, school, Boys & Girls Club , the library, daycare etc.). Anyone can request one!

Did You Know? Many of Bennis’s pieces have his children’s names hidden in them, like the mural inside of the Brookings Public Library .

My favorite murals are... representative of a town. Recently, I’ve done some large scale work in Castlewood and New Ulm, MN. I would go through and learn all kinds of details about the town and figure out what to highlight. In Castlewood, it was the building that was one of the first buildings in the town and was built by the very first mayor, so I highlighted him with an homage to his fancy car. The pride they have is unbelievable in that piece and in their town.
I am currently working on...
a piece for Shorty's Burgers & Brew . It’s a long-time favorite, family-owned food truck in Brookings that’s opening their first brick and mortar store in a brand new building on 6th Street.
Brookings Strong was a team effort between The Socialight Boutique , Gameday Social , and Bennis Art Studios to raise funds for small businesses affected by COVID and recently raised money for businesses affected by a downtown building fire.

One of my favorite places to eat in Brookings... is Taquería El Jarocho . If you haven’t had a Quesabirria , get one now! It’s a warm crispy, cheesy, gooey, soft, meaty, flavorful, and delectable pocket. I’m drooling while talking about this. And they are the recipient of the latest Bennis mural that highlights their Mexican and Venezuelan heritage. A perfect day in Brookings is... spending it with my wife and two boys—hitting up the Farmers’ Market in the morning, kayaking at Dakota Nature Park in the afternoon, and then cruising the old truck to the Old Souls Car Club meetup at Pioneer Park. Whenever we have out-of- town friends visit, we... show them The Prairie is My Garden by Harvey Dunn at the South Dakota Art Museum , take them to the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum , and then we all climb the 180 steps to the top of the Coughlin Campanile . Advice I have for someone who wants to create art for a career is... be really good at what you do and be well liked. Do these two things and you'll be successful; you cannot fail. And a quote that I've found to help me in all my careers, including art, is: "Work to learn and you will always earn." to four productions in nine weeks at the Oscar Larson Theatre . 605 was able to stop by during their performance of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers , based on the 1954 MGM musical/ Western film. “It's got dancing cowboys and tons of entertainment,” teased Wilburn to the team before curtain. “Who doesn’t love singing and dancing?” Each show is a mix of SDSU students and students from other universities, along with guest artists and faculty. Planning for productions starts a year out, with casting in January and February. Then once May hits, they hit the ground running.
“Theater is a collaborative art form where you're always working with other people,” said artistic director of Prairie Repertory Theatre Billy Wilburn . “You're never working alone; you're always part of a team.” Started in 1970, the South Dakota State University theater group has a two-part mission: to provide intense training for students involved in the program and to provide the best possible theatrical entertainment for the people of South Dakota and the region. Each summer season, Prairie Repertory Theatre takes on almost 50 students to produce three

“They learn so much in a short amount of time. It’s such a good experience.” Billy Wilburn
“Once we arrive in May, we have rehearsals every day—it's a very concentrated period of time,” said Wilburn. “Essentially we have three rehearsal slots, and we're working on all of the shows simultaneously.” While the group is a “well-oiled machine,” each year adjustments are made to make the experience better and to help students have deeper learning experiences. Education is the cornerstone of SDSU, says Wilburn, and Prairie Repertory Theatre fits that model to set participants up for success. “When they leave our program and graduate, our students go out and work in Broadway and Chicago and LA and they're doing amazing things,” he said. “As a matter of fact, one of our alumni from Prairie Rep was just in Sioux Falls for the touring Broadway show of The Addams Family .” The artistic program has served over 544,000 patrons and around 2,000 students in 54 years. Wilburn says there is a two-hour radius where they draw people in from, including many rural areas. Because of the remote locations, Prairie Repertory Theatre is sometimes the audience member’s first time seeing a play or being in a theater.

“With our rural audiences in mind, it’s important we're representing theater, representing what the arts are, and how important they are to life,” said Wilburn. The group has given backstage tours to the community to give them a glimpse into what it’s like producing theater as “an education for the audience.” SDSU brings in guest artists, costume designers, lighting designers, and more to work alongside students to create everything from costumes to set design. “When they're not in rehearsal, they’re working on scenery, costumes, lighting, props, and sound,” said Wilburn. Along with stage production and acting, students also get exposure in publicity and the box office at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center . This involves everything from creating press releases to running social media to ad and billboard placements.
“That's the biggest mission for us—to help
young professionals go out and work and also provide entertainment to an area that may not have seen theater.” Billy Wilburn

“The whole experience takes everyone to make it happen,” said Wilburn. “That's the fun part.” Prairie Repertory Theatre isn’t the only thing taking place at the performing arts center. The venue, which had a major expansion in 2019, showcases everything from concerts to symposiums to other theater productions (i.e. Brookings Community Theatre ). With it being a “world class facility,” Wilburn says it draws students from all over, like Boston Conservatory at Berklee , New York University (NYU) , and Carnegie Mellon University . An educator at heart, touching the students’ lives and seeing their growth is what he says keeps him inspired. “It’s amazing to see students change from when they arrived with us to nine weeks later. You see how much they've learned,” said Wilburn. “It’s the human connection that's really the most important thing for me.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT PRAIRIEREP.ORG+

For eight years, 605 has hit the highway (and interstate) to explore South Dakota in all its glory for the team’s annual road trip. In July of 2025, the 605 Sprinter Van ( Vincent Van-Go ) pulled into Brookings—the state’s fourth largest city with a population of over 24,000. Known for its low crime rate, tree-lined streets, and blend of college-town energy with a small-town feel, we were eager to get out and explore during our three-day vacay.

THURSDAY, JULY 10 11 a.m.
605 arrived and drove straight to the First Bank & Trust Arena to receive a private tour of the newer facility that hosts South Dakota State University’s men’s/women’s volleyball, basketball, and wrestling. The new and approved venue also kept Frost Arena nostalgia, with both visitors’, students’, and athletes’ experiences in mind during the renovation. 12 p.m. Our private tours continued with an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium . The home of Jackrabbits Football has hosted everything from ESPN’s College GameDay to Jacks Bash with acts like Blake Shelton and Thomas Rhett . 1 p.m. Needing a sugar fix after hearing about all of the arena and stadium concessions, 605 headed to the SDSU Dairy Bar located in the David Dairy Plant on campus. Along with getting a scoop of Mint Chocolate Chip and sampling other ice cream flavors made by students, we tried a Root Beer Float and Dragon Fruit Strawberry Bobachiller™ .

2 p.m. Though the sweet drinks and dessert were extremely satisfying, the 605 crew was ready for lunch. What better way to order a little bit of everything than going to Cubby’s Sports Bar & Grill downtown? We all ordered their famous Bloody Mary with our preferred sidecars, and started with some Chislic and Stadium Nachos . After ordering a bunch of other items to share, we ventured up to the rooftop patio to take in the views of Main Avenue. 3:30 p.m. Hightailing it out of the restaurant with full bellies, we headed across the street to Kool Beans Coffee and Roasterie to meet local artist Chuck Bennis of Bennis Art Studios , where he was enjoying a beverage. After a brief chat, we ventured around downtown to see a few of his large-scale murals, including works of art in alleyways and inside of the Brookings Public Library . 4:30 p.m. Wishing we had more time, our rooms were ready at the Garner Hotel Brookings by IHG . Formerly the Holiday Inn Express & Suites , the rebrand also came with upgraded accommodations, amenities, and décor. 6 p.m. With just enough time to get settled in and unpack, 605 hopped back into Vincent Van-Go to The Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center to catch Prairie Repertory Theatre’s performance of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers . All of the actors were working the entire event in costume, from handing out programs to seating guests, ready to hit the stage.

Did You Know? Brookings’ namesake is after Judge Wilmot Wood Brookings , an influential 19th-century pioneer, land developer, and politician who helped settle the Dakota Territory . The city and county honor his role as a promoter of the area, having founded the community in 1879. While traveling in the winter of 1858 to establish a town site, Brookings fell into freezing water and suffered severe frostbite, requiring both his legs to be amputated. He was affectionately known as "ol' wooden legs" and continued his pioneering work. Wooden Legs Brewing Co. is a nod to the historic figure.
8 p.m. Jealous we didn't get to relax on Cubby’s rooftop patio earlier, we stopped “for one” to recap our day
11 a.m. One bite of rhubarb wasn’t quite enough, so we were looking forward to lunch at Wooden Legs Brewing Company . The craft beer and pub food hit the spot, and we inhaled their Crab Rangoon pizza. Taking a few minutes to play some games, we realized it was time to head out. 1:30 p.m. The team was back at Kool Beans, but this time we were there for the coffee and ambiance. After spending way too much on merch, co-owner Kurt Osborne took us back into the roasting room. There were new signs around stating the company was eliminating single-use cups for drinks in-house to cut down on waste. Guests can either use a house mug or bring in their own for $.50 off their purchase. Color us impressed!
IT’S OKAY TO GO
and to gaze at the stars. FRIDAY, JULY 11 8 a.m.
We quickly ate complimentary breakfast at the hotel (the snooze button was calling) and filled up much-needed coffees to-go to take to Sanderson Gardens nearby in Aurora. Jan Sanderson and his family greeted us, taking the team around the “ U-pick ” style operation. It was strawberry season, and people were coming out in droves to fill up their containers with fresh produce. Sanderson offered us a bite of fresh rhubarb straight from the garden, which was on brand since he’s dubbed the Rhubarb King .

2:30 p.m. Our feet rejoiced as the next location was inside of the same space! Mosaic Wine Bar & Small Plates was steps away, with both Kool Beans and Mosaic customers hanging out at tables. Owners Katelyn and Nathaniel Condelli shared their story and poured us some wine to pair with an assortment of small plates (the Charcuterie was perfecto). 4 p.m. After reminiscing about the trip thus far (and Jan Sanderson’s incredible overalls), we caught the time and drove close by to Eponymous Brewing Company . The nano-brewery also had some great merch, and we grabbed a sticker as we looked around. Finding a spot, we left one of our stickers on a pillar to trade and to show we were there. 6 p.m. Dusk was getting close, so we made the trek over to McCrory Gardens , which is home to over 41,000 flowers, trees, and shrubs. Lisa Marotz walked us around a portion of the 25 acres, giving us insight on the horticultural education, events, and happenings that occur on site.
