WHAT I WANT TO BE WHEN I GROW UP

VIP Referral Patient of the Month!

PHYSICAL THERAPY WASN’T ALWAYS ON MY RADAR

LARRY SCLAFANI

The best compliment we can receive is to have one of our patients refer a friend or family member to our practice. If you refer someone and we are able to take them as a patient, both you and the person who was referred will be entered to Win a $25 gift card! It’s just our way of saying

This may surprise some readers, but when I was growing up, becoming a physical therapist wasn’t something I ever considered. I still wanted to help heal those in need, but I had my sights set on working with patients that were a little furrier. You see, I grew up wanting to be a vet. From the time I was old enough to take orders, |I’d spend my summers at a veterinary hospital in Pennsylvania. My uncle was the owner and lead veterinarian, so I had the opportunity to learn from the best. Seeing him save a pet’s life through surgery was awe inspiring as was the gratitude of the families reunited with their beloved animal. I knew I wanted to help families the way my uncle did. Now, some of you may be squeamish at the thought of being a young adult witnessing surgeries — on animals or otherwise — but to me, that was my world. From a young age, I’d always been interested in medicine, anatomy, and health care in general. Those summers with my uncle were chances to see so many of the concepts I’d read about put into action as well as a chance to see the good they could do. So, naturally, when I got the chance to take an anatomy class in my junior year of high school, I jumped at it. At the time, I thought it would give me more knowledge for my path to becoming a veterinarian. But that’s when my teacher gave a lecture on sports science and physical therapy.

A whole new world opened up to me over the course of one lecture. Physical therapy hadn’t even been on my radar as a possible career, but there it was, and it fit my life so well. At the time, I was a powerlifter and always enjoyed sports. This was the perfect way to combine my love of athletics with my academic passion for anatomy. After class, I talked to the professor about what I needed to do to become a therapist myself. Just like that, my plans shifted. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing; after all, I still get to help those in need. But while I didn’t follow my uncle into veterinary care, I still learned a lot of useful skills from all those summers at the hospital. My uncle’s caring nature, his sharp eyes, and the dignity and respect with which he treated families — these are all things I’ve strived to carry forward from his tutelage. Of course, if you ask me now what I want to do after I “grow up,” I’ll admit I wouldn’t mind teaching anatomy. The science has helped me so much during my life, both in sports and in medicine, so I would jump at the chance to share that gift with the next generation of caregivers. That said, my work here at Cornerstone gives me the opportunity to help my patients better understand their own bodies and how to take care of them. So, I guess I really am getting the best of both worlds right where I am. –David DeLaFuente

Spring- Greening 3 Eco-Friendly Home Swaps to Make When You Declutter

“From the moment I got to Cornerstone, I was treated like family. Everyone here is very knowledgeable and respectful. I was able to return to sports and work without any difficulty. I’m leaving here feeling 100% and would not recommend going anywhere else.” –Daniel G.

It takes a special kind of person to enjoy spring-cleaning. For most of us, the satisfaction of a clean house doesn’t quite outweigh the hours of scrubbing, sorting, and slogging through heaps of unnecessary stuff. If you’re struggling to find the motivation to start your spring-cleaning, try flipping the paradigm: Instead of spring-cleaning, think of what you’re doing as spring- greening , and make some eco-friendly swaps along the way. Here are a few ideas to get you started. According to a Statista report, in 2019, the household cleaners market was worth more than $31 billion, and it’s continuously growing. You can save money on cleaning supplies by taking the green route. When your current stock runs out, try buying bulk cleaners or making your own. Both options will save plastic because you can reuse your bottles, and they can help you avoid the harmful chemicals found in most cleaners. Visit UnderATinRoof. com and read the blog post “Zero Waste Cleaning Supplies + Recipes” to get started. to step out of your comfort zone. This spring, try exploring greener alternatives like plant-based bulk laundry powder (Molly’s Suds is an excellent source). Or, if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can even try adding all-natural cleaners like soap nuts or English ivy to your laundry loads. For more on the former, search “soap nuts” on 1MillionWomen.com, and read up on ivy detergent at Permacrafters.com/English-Ivy-Laundry- Detergent. 3. SAY GOODBYE TO PAPER TOWELS. Paper towels are a mainstay in American homes, but do we really need them when a good old-fashioned rag can do the job? According to the Ocean Conservancy, 13 billion pounds of paper towels are tossed in the U.S. each year! This spring, quit paper towels and keep a stash of dish rags under the sink to do your dirty work. When you’re cleaning out your closet, you can even cut up old T-shirts and add them to your rag stash! If you’re brave, try giving up tissues, too — an old-school hanky does the trick. 1. SWAP YOUR PLASTIC SPRAY BOTTLES FOR BULK OR DIY CLEANING PRODUCTS. 2. EXPLORE ALTERNATIVE LAUNDRY DETERGENTS. If you’re used to using a plastic jug of liquid laundry detergent, it’s time

“Physical therapy has been crucial in helping me get back to just being myself. Without the great team of physical therapists here at Cornerstone Physical Therapy, it would have taken a really long time to feel better. You guys rock! I would definitely recommend Cornerstone to others in need of care.”

–Enjoli J.

HOW TO LESSEN YOUR PAIN QUICKLY! In last December’s edition, we talked about the idea of laser therapy and what it does. But what are the benefits, in detail, of choosing laser therapy? You have a lot of options within physical therapy to lessen your pain. How do you decide whether or not to go through this procedure?

LASER TECHNOLOGY IS HIGHLY TRUSTED IN THE MEDICAL FIELD.

Laser technology has been developed for decades now, and the other applications include reducing swelling and helping to eliminate cancer. While you might not have heard of laser therapy until you entered a physical therapist’s office, lasers have been applied in the medical field for decades. You may associate lasers with surgery, such as LASIK eye surgery, but laser therapy is simply the same tool engineered for different purposes. It’s noninvasive and encourages cell activity without cutting your skin.

LASER THERAPY FEELS GOOD AND WORKS FAST. It’s not often that we think of medical procedures as quick and painless — much less pleasant. But laser therapy can create little to no sensation or even a pleasant warm feeling. It also works quickly; the whole session only lasts 5–10 minutes. You won’t believe how much your persistent, chronic pains can lessen thanks to the advances in laser technology. Talk to our team of experts at the Cornerstone PT & Wellness Center, and see how we can customize our laser therapy sessions to meet your needs today. Give us a call at 732-499-4540.

Especially if you struggle with acute or chronic conditions, health care providers can pinpoint and treat your issues like never before with the precision of lasers.

LASER THERAPY WILL REDUCE PAIN AND INFLAMMATION WITHOUT SIDE EFFECTS. Medication has to be dissolved and processed by your body to go into effect. This often sparks multiple other reactions, like nausea, headaches, and worse pain elsewhere. However, laser therapy skips all that. It directly targets the mitochondria of your cells and encourages cellular metabolism and a stronger healing process overall. Many patients report experiencing long-lasting relief from their pain.

Stay Stateside With These Little-Known St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

Staying Stateside for St. Paddy’s?

CELEBRATE WITH THESE LITTLE-KNOWN FESTIVITIES

A LITTLE LUCK IN AMERICA’S HEARTLAND O’Neill, Nebraska, is home to the world’s largest shamrock and more unique St. Patrick’s Day traditions. This Irish community doubles down on its heritage every March with a traditional parade, music, and Irish dancing. But the town also hosts a popular dodgeball tournament and donkey basketball. What could be better than pummeling your opponents in dodgeball and outpacing the competition while riding a donkey in the school gymnasium? Perhaps enjoying a pint or two with your teammates afterward. And O’Neill is just the spot to do it. OHIO’S LITTLE PIECE OF IRELAND You may not be able to fly to Ireland, but you can visit a little piece of it right in the U.S. Head to Dublin, Ohio, this St. Patrick’s Day for a traditional celebration sure to put a wee bit o’ pep in your step. Partake in a traditional Irish breakfast or enjoy a parade complete with bagpipers and Irish dancers. Boasting one of the largest celebrations in the U.S., Dublin is an affordable alternative for those looking to celebrate the Irish way.

There’s no place quite like Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day. What was once a purely religious holiday to honor the legend of St. Patrick chasing all the snakes out of the country has turned into a global celebration. But if a trip to Ireland isn’t in the budget, check out these three little-known stateside destinations that are just as festive. SHORT AND SWEET IN ARKANSAS Thanks to the clever thinking of some Irish friends meeting for a pint at a bar on one of the shortest streets in the world, Bridge Street in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the First Ever 17th Annual World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade will travel 98 feet once again this year. Don’t assume the turnout isn’t robust just because the distance is staggeringly low. The parade lasts for hours, drawing thousands of people to watch celebrities, musicians, bands, floats, and Miss Arkansas glide by. The event also features a Blarney stone kissing contest and a parade king and queen.
