Food Hubs and Aquaculture

Artisan Agriculture Genuinely Southern Forests was established as a brand to promote the produce, producers and agri- food offerings of the Warren-Blackwood sub-region - including the towns of Manjimup, Pemberton, Northcliffe, Walpole, Bridgetown, Greenbushes and Nannup. The goal is to unify the area’s world- class, diverse artisan producers to strengthen the region’s economy, attract investment and export opportunities, promote regional pride, and create sustainable jobs. It represents local producers, culinary and agri-tourism operators who live and work in what is WA’s premier food bowl, aiming to ultimately establish the Southern Forests as an internationally recognised agricultural region and culinary tourism destination. There is an opportunity to extend the value of the Southern Forests Food Council to members and to the regional economy through investing in a common user strategy, including a central facility with equipment currently not available locally and a scheduling mechanism to facilitate member access to existing food processing and distribution infrastructure on a user pays basis. This would enable improve the business fundamentals of equipment owners and users, while enabling the region to continue its journey towards becoming a world-renowned food region. Aquaculture The South West’s saltwater aquaculture industry operates along the south coast. Currently this includes abalone farming and processing in Augusta. However, there is significant capacity to grow the industry and diversify the species farmed, particularly along the coast between Bunbury and Busselton. While it has the potential for expansion, inland freshwater aquaculture is in evidence. It includes marron,
