Emerging Industries and Advanced Manufacturing

Sustainable Forestry The South West timber sector is at the heart of the Sustainable Forestry strategy proposed in the first half of the WA Investment Prospectus. A feasibility study has been developed for a shared use timber processing yard within Greater Bunbury. This proposal outlines a strategy to value-add and reduce costs by way of a common user facility. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states that ‘In the long-term, a sustainable forest management strategy aimed at maintaining or increasing forest carbon stocks, while producing an annual sustained yield of timber, fibre or energy from the forest will generate the largest sustained mitigation benefit.’ The realisation of these plans is predicated on approval of thinning for conservation and bushfire fuel load reduction purposes as part of the new Forest Management Plan; clustering synergies involved in processing the small diameter logs that result into high value wood veneers. The proposal outlines government and industry contributions to each project within the cluster, direct and indirect employment and economic gains through the project and export growth values. Part of the cluster is the establishment of an innovation centre to support ongoing wood product research and development.
