UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT

At the centre of Battle is the famous Battle Abbey, site of the Norman conquest, where visitors can enjoy an audio tour, hunt out wooden figures on the battlefield and enjoy stunning views from the gatehouse roof. Almost as ancient is the church of St Mary the Virgin, built around a thousand years ago when the monks of Battle Abbey claimed to be distracted by local people coming to worship in the abbey church. The beautiful Grade I listed parish church now contains a modern 3m long tapestry depicting the history of the town, as well as stained glass windows that commemorate the Battle of Hasting. You can see crosses carved into the walls by Crusader swords. When you tire of history, head out to the footpaths and cycle tracks that wend around the local countryside, especially Battle Great Wood, with 200 acres of woodland, heath and meandering streams, and wide paths perfect for walking and cycling. Here you can spot deer, badgers and rare birds including nightjars, tree pipits and crossbills. In spring it’s carpeted with bluebells, in autumn with fabulously coloured fungi.

towns – although that may be changing with new developments coming along both within the town itself and in neighbouring villages such as nearby Nethereld. In the meantime, almost every type of home is available in this compact town – beautiful Edwardian townhouses in need of modernisation cost a fraction of London prices, and quaint weatherboarded listed cottages can occasionally be spotted on the market. Meanwhile, older properties converted into maisonettes provide compact accommodation near to the station, and more modern estate homes are located in the Coronation Gardens area. For well-priced new builds, the village of Nethereld is the best place to start your search, while Field Way, on the edge of town close to Battle Sports Centre, also has attractive new properties. Wherever you are there are great educational

The attractive East Sussex town of Battle is seven miles inland from the seaside town of Hastings, and was nothing but elds before the Norman invasion and the famous battle of 1066 where King Harold died from an arrow in the eye. The victor, William the Conqueror, had an abbey built there as a penance for the bloodshed of his victory, and a small town – now known as Battle – grew up around it. Surrounded by woodland, Battle provided oak for England’s shipyards, and later cannons, cannonballs and gunpowder, with its military history preserved in the street name Powdermill Lane. Clockmaking was also a popular trade, with the development of the rst ever electric clock taking place there. A further boost to Battle’s economy came in 1852 with the arrival of the railway, and its impressive Gothic station is Grade II listed. There are around two trains an hour to Hastings and to London, with services to London Bridge taking from just an hour and eight minutes at peak times. The area is well connected by road, with easy access to the resorts of Bexhill, Pevensey Bay, Eastbourne and Brighton, as well as inland routes to the High Weald and Royal Tunbridge Wells. Despite its commuter-friendliness, Battle is still a small town of only around 7,000 people, frequently overshadowed by the larger seaside
