Dfecember 22— (D. L. Moody’s “ Corona tion Day,” 1899.) "With long life will I satisfy him” (Psa. 91:16). We are all the time coming to the end of things here—the end o f the week, the end of the month, the end o f the year. It is end, end, end all the time. But, thank God, He is going to satisfy us with long life, endless life, with no end to it! — D. L. Moody. The life that counts must toll and fight; Must hate the wrong and love the right; Must stand by truth by day and night— This is the life that counts. The life that counts is linked with God, And turns not from the cross, the rod, But walks with joy where Jesus trod— This is the life that counts. — Selected. —o— December 23— “Now, after the death o f Moses, the servant o f the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son o f Nun, Moses’ minister, saying, Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people” (Josh. 1 :1, 2). Sorrow came to you yesterday and emptied your home. Your first impulse now is to give up, and sit down in despair amid the wrecks of your hopes. But you dare not do that. You are in the lines of battle, and the crisis is at hand. To falter a moment would be to imperil some holy interest. Other lives would be harmed by your pausing. Holy interests would suffer should your hands be folded. You must not linger even to indulge your grief. Sorrows are but incidents in life, and must not interrupt us. We must leave them be hind, while we press on to the things that are before. God has so ordered that in pressing on in duty we shall find the truest, richest comfort for ourselves. Sit ting down to brood over our sorrows, the darkness deepens about us and creeps in to our hearts, and our strength changes to weakness. But if we turn away from the gloom, and take up the tasks and duties to which God calls us, the light will come again and we shall grow stronger. When all our hopes are gone, ’Tis well our hands must still keep toiling on For others’ sake; For strength to bear is found in duty done; And he is blest indeed who learns to make The joy of others cure his own heart ache. ■— Selected. December 24—“I bring you good tid ings o f great joy, which shall be to all people” (Lk. 2:10). If we are sitting in peace and joy, our h e a r t s filled with sweet Christmas thoughts, we should remember those whose homes will be dark and sad to morrow. Perhaps we can do little to give them comfort; but we can pray for them,
