must set our own ideas aside. God is to be the chief object o f our faith and hope. Sometimes God may keep us waiting, as He did Abraham, for twenty-five _years. We will be tempted today, and tried to morrow. What we have to do is to lean constantly on Jesus; there is no life apart from Him. Nothing else is definite or clear. That is the lesson that Abraham learned. So on I go not knowing, I would not if I might; I would rather walk in the dark with God, Than go alone in the light.” — Selected. December 27— "When they stood, they let down their wings. And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads, when they stood, and had let down their wings” (Ezek. 1:24,25). “There was a voice” ! This is exactly what our whole heart desires. When the Master has come in and prepared us for His service, we long for some sound from Him, some fresh voice, which will give us the courage we need in order to leave the past behind; and which will also give us clear and distinct commands as to what to do. Shall that mighty voice sound for me? Let each o f us begin by exoecting, “ God will surely speak to me.” He said to Paul, “The God o f thy fathers hath chosen thee that thou shouldest hear ''the voice o f his mouth.” Chosen to fyëajr 1 Does God so value a listening servant? Then we shall not disappoint Him by ndt listening, but shall each “stand still awhile, that He may show us the Word o f God.” How shall we hear it? “There was a voice when they stood, and had let down their wings.” This, is the way to hear—-to let the wings down, t o .stand mute and mo tionless in His presence, our flight having been checked, our spirit quieted, and our work suspended. We may think the work is too important to leave, and that it would suffer if we ceased. But that which makes the work to suffer is our lack of knowl edge o f His will ; it brings want o f direct ness of aim. The service requires the voice. The wings have to be “let down”— the wings of our work, and the wings of our will. It may be that we find work clinging to us, and becoming more to us than He is. Has the very glory o f service come between you and Him? This must be set right. Fold your wings and listen! God will not let His workers suffer for the sake o f their work. Speak, Lord, in the stillness, December 28— “ Two golden spouts” (Zech. 4:12, R. V .). What a sermon there is in a wick! Sit beside it, and ask how it dares hope that it can supply light for hours and hours to come. “Will you not soon burn to an end, you wick o f a lamp?” “ N o; I do not fear it, since the light does not burn me, though it burns on me. I only bear to it the oil which saturates my texture. I am but the ladder up which it climbs. It is not I, but the oil that is in me, that fur nishes the light.” While I wait on Thee. Hush my heart to listen In expectancy.

and thus call down blessing upon them. Here is a prayer for Christmas Eve: O Lord, there sit apart in lonely places, On this, the gladdest night of all the year, Some stricken ones with sad and weary faces, To whom the thought of Christmas brings no cheer. For these, O Father, our petition hear, And send the pitying Christ-child very near. And there be tempted souls this night, still waging Such desperate warfare with all evil powers; Anthems of peace, while the dead strife is raging, Sound but a mockery through their mid night hours; For these, O Father, our petition hear. And send Thy tempted, sinless Christ-child very near. Lord, some sit by lonely hearthstones, sobbing, Who feel this night all earthly love de nied, Who hear but dirges in the loud bells’ ,throbbing For loved ones lost who blessed last Christmastide; For these, O Father, our petition hear, And send the loving Christ-child very near. — Selected. —o— December 25— "R e j o i c e evermore" (1 Thess. 5:16). The Christmas festival celebrates the joyous fact that, for a prodigal race, Christ has opened the way back to the Father’s house. “It is meet that we make merry, for this, my son, was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” Christ changes impotence to conquering strength. He is every man’s December, for He makes an end o f one condition of life and presents the opportunity o f a new existence. And when this life ends, as ends the year, He will bring us to another life where time’s feeble reckon ings and faulty days are lost in the vast ness and the purity o f eternity. —John MacBeath. —o— December 26— "Now the Lord had said unto Abram, get thee out o f thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy fa ther’s house, unto a land that I wilt show thee” (Gen. 12:1). This was a great step o f faith in Abra ham’s life. He had to exercise faith with out clear light. He had no map by which his pilgrimage could be guided. He had no itinerary of the desert, which he was to cross, that would even show him when he reached the end of it. He had only the naked Word of the Lord: “Get thee out unto a land that I will show thee.” The call was clear, but nothing else was. God would be with him, and show him the way as he needed to know it; that was all. When God calls us out of our own land to go to the land o f promise, the first thing we have to leave is 'our precon ceived notions of what is to be done. We
