I n kitchens across America, Kohler sinks and fixtures come together with appliances from Mongram and Café to provide the ultimate in form and function. So it is appropriate that they have joined forces to help make such pairings even more seamless. The brands’ new customizations will allow homeowners to coordi- nate finishes as never before. Café is unveiling two hardware offerings. For a classic look, its Brushed Brass finish makes an ideal partner for Kohler’s Vibrant Brushed Moderne Brass. Those seeking an edgier, more contempo-

rary feel can look to Kohler’s Matte Black and Café Flat Black finishes to accentuate a space’s darker details. Meanwhile, Monogram’s Titanium collec- tions are a cool match with Kallista’s Gunmetal— ideal for a modern look. And Monogram’s Brass collection teams with Kallista’s Unlaquered Brass to offer golden glow. “Kohler’s partnership with Monogram and CAFÉ provides a nice symmetry,” notes Scott Edmunds, vice-president of marketing at Kohler Co. “We are proud to have a partner like GE Appliances that shares a similar passion for design.” ■

give her the space she needed. After explaining to her that there were only pros and no cons whatsoever, she agreed to move forward and today she is so happy with the outcome! If you were a color, what color would you be and why? White would be my first favorite be- cause it speaks of freshness, clean- liness, and perfection to me. Second runner-up would be emerald green; it is a deep vivid color without being overwhelming—like nature. Since you mostly find yourself work- ing on bathroom design, is there something you’d like to do more of? Outdoor living area design. How do you unwind when you’re feeling stressed? Taking a little quiet time always helps. Is there a design upgrade you’d love

How would you describe your per- sonal design style? I tend to lean more towards transi- tional, chic farmhouse. I find it inviting and warm—creating an atmosphere ideal for family and friend gatherings. I am not one for formal areas which are used only once or twice a year. Who inspires you? My sons are my inspiration. They con- stantly show me new ways of commu- nication and are always confirming that it is ok to think “outside the box.” Is there a show that features design you love? Love It or List It is my favorite because there are always ways to make a situ- ation work. Can you share a design challenge you encountered on a project and how you made it work? What’s something from the history of design that fascinates you? One of the Wonders of the Ancient World: the Colossus of Rhodes in Greece. The statue of the sun god took 12 years to build (226 BC–280 BC). Amazing. Is there a talent or skill that you wish you had? I would have loved to know two more foreign languages. What’s one of your favorite pieces of fashion when the weather cools? Boots. I love boots.

SPECIAL EDITIONS

Kohler Artist Editions by Nahú, Wang, Elle and Kumari

FEARLESS FEMALE CREATORS SHAPE ART FOR THE HOME

T E X T PAUL HAGEN

M ilan Design Week annually hosts impressive installations by the globe’s leading design voices. In 2023, Kohler made a splash with a display showcasing exciting female artists from around the world. As part of an instal- lation called The Creator’s Journey, four artists ac- cepted the challenge to transform three of Kohler’s current offerings. Among them were the future-is- now Numi 2.0 Smart Toilet, the versatile Brazn sink, and the statuesque Brazn freestanding tub. Each woman crafted a design that complemented the Kohler pieces while also reflecting their own aes- thetic visions and places or origin.

Born in Brazil, Ananda Nahú brought the ener- gy of that country’s iconic Ipanema Beach to her work. Flora Tropical ’s design—cascading waves and blooming flowers against a gradient of saturated colors—is exciting and visually dense. Ziling Wang employs imagery and brush strokes commonly associated with historic work from her native China in A World on Strings . “With this collec- tion, I am creating a mythological atmosphere across the beautiful and diverse Kohler product forms as a three-dimensional canvas,” she says. “It is now func- tional art all through the home.” In the tradition of artists from Adele to Zendaya, Elle only goes by one name. Her Artist Edition piece

Falling Gently mixes natural imagery with layered, dripping-spray-paint energy from her background in street art. “I’m thrilled to be part of this global artist collaboration with other powerful creative women from around the world,” she says. Pushpa Kumari calls her design Aranya , which is Hindi for forest. Appropriately, the lines of her tree-centric images offer nods to India’s traditional symbolic art. Janet Echelman had already created an Artist Edition sink when Kohler asked her to share additional work as part of this exhibition. Her sculpture—an undulation of brightly colored netting—recalled the move- ment of water both in its form and reflection from below. It’s called Noli Timere —“Do Not Fear” in Latin. Visitors to the exhibition also fearlessly took up the creator’s mantle themselves—manipulating their own designs and seeing how they would look wrapped smartly around Kohler product. To honor the company’s 150th anniversa- ry, Kohler plans to offer 150 of each Creator’s Journey piece. Thus, they will be priced at a premium with the Brazn sink at $1,400, the Numi 2.0 at $15,500, and the Brazn tub at $19,000. They are slated to begin shipping in November 2023. Visit kohler.com . ■

Designer Huma Sulaiman says her goal was to seduce all the senses with this Parisian Dream bathroom with an airy design that features Kohler fixtures on the vanity.

HOW A SURPRISE MADE THIS SHOW HOUSE AN EXTRA- HOT TICKET T he most recent Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas came with a dose of added drama. The project’s 24 designers and architects arrived to transform a 12,500-square-foot Texas estate as anticipated. But with opening day in sight, the project hit a snag. A stop- work order halted progress for over two weeks due to concerns from a local homeowner’s association. Ultimately, a compromise allowed the house to open to the public. But rather than the month organizers planned, it would be open a mere four days. Organizers welcomed as many guests as possible to view spaces such as LC Studio’s cool, midcentury family room or Avrea & Company’s bedroom blast from a show house past. Trends included plenty of purple (from mauve to ma- genta) and beautiful Kohler fixtures in the kitchen and bath. The show house’s next location has yet to be announced. However, hopes remain high that it will stay open for longer than a few days. Learn and see more at kipsbaydecoratorshowhouse.org. ■ T E X T PAUL HAGEN PHOTOGRAPHY NATHAN SCHROEDER
