HEALTHY TIP FOR ROTATOR CUFF MUSCLES This is one of the micro-exercises Cecelia has developed to help patients with shoulder mobility. With micro-exercises out-loud self-talk is included, and this exercise is no exception. “Pat on the Back”
IS PHYSIOYOGA FOR YOU? • Are you recovering from an injury? • Have a nagging condition that needs some attention and specific exercises to get stronger and moving with more ease? • Do you want to lower your stress and slow down? PhysioYoga may be PERFECT for you! This approach combines the knowledge, experience and exercises from a physiotherapist with yoga poses and principles. PhysioYoga is movement, strengthening, posture, flexibility and breathing under the supervision and guidance of a physiotherapist and yoga teacher. An assessment is required first to get to know you and your medical history, understand your goals and how you are moving. Props - like bands, blocks, belts, a chair, etc – are commonly used and encouraged to find versions of poses that work for your body. We can work together one on one to create a plan to meet your needs or you can join a group PhysioYoga class. Summer PhysioYoga class schedule starts July 2, 2019, led by Stephanie McCarville, Physiotherapist & Yoga Teacher . Call the Fall River clinic to book an assessment or visit www.physioflowyoga.ca for more details. While you are doing this exercise you benefit fromgreat rotator cuff engagement and the opportunity to say something nice to yourself. I like teaching people to talk out-loud to themselves to create new brain synapses associated with self-kindness. Saying something nice (a compliment) while doing this pat on the back exercise reinforces the good benefit of the exercise and releases feel good hormones. Things to try are: “Way to go (your name here) you’re doing a good rotator cuff exercise.” (Sometimes I say things like: “Way to go Cecelia, you made yourself a good cup of tea.”) What you say isn’t that important as long as you are kind to yourself. Enjoy!! By Cecelia Driscoll, RMT
Using the same hand and same shoulder reach overhead (in your pain-free range-of-motion) and pat your back (or as close as you can get; you can pat in the air and visualize that your hand is on your back) .
