Some believer is the link to connect with that atoning blood, that witnessing gos* pel, and that comforting Spirit. There is almost always a human agent somewhere : it may be only in the giving of a tract, the asking of a question ; it may be a par ent, a Sunday-school teacher, a minister of Christ ; but there is some human link that comes between the soul and the gos pel, and so men are saved. Paul said, “I fill up that which is behind of the afflic tions of Christ.” Until the believer falls into line, something is missing. Christ on the cross is to be brought, to the knowledge of men. The. Holy Ghost is an invisible Per sonality, unknown and unrecognized by the world. How is the world to be saved ? The believing child of God lifts up the cross, tells the gospel story to the unsaved, be comes the dwelling-place of the Holy Spir it, and out of him flows the water of life. Paul counted mission work a sublime priv ilege : “Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach atnohg the Gentiles the un searchable riches of Christ.” —A rthur T. P ierson . JANUARY 8 “/ will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remembir thy wonders o f old,” (Psa. 77:11). A visitor in the home of à wealthy friend was surprised to discover hanging upon the wall'of liis host’s bedroom a somewhat faded, water-discolored life preserver. He asked for an explanation. “That isn't an ordinary life preserver to me," explained his host. “It kept me afloat ten hours after the steamer on which I had embarked had been sent to the bottom of the ocean by a submarine. I keep it where I can see it the last thing at night and the first thing in the morning. It helps to keep me thankful and; appreciative.” If Christians kept Christ before them more consistently, they would not only be far better Christians than they âre, but far more grateful Chris tians. The thought of pleasing Christ would be with them the first thing in the morning and the last thing at night. Not only this—they would eagerly grasp every opportunity that came to them to tell others of thé great things Christ has done for them.— M oody M onthly . JANUARY 9 “Whose I am, and whom I serve” (Acts 27:23). Two boys are born on the self-same day. One is the son of a king, set apart from his birth to high estate and office ; the othèr is the son of a pauper. Why is it that con tinually the young prince has it impressed upon him that he is the son of a king ? Is there any practical benefit in it? Indeed there is.. Two boys may often walk the same streets, but their practical life and behavior are as different as can be. The prince, is separated from many low and vulgar ways, because by birth he was abso lutely set apart to kingly estate. So it must ever be with us. Never can we be too often reminded that, by the re- d'emptive work of Christ, by the Spirit’s work and indwelling, we have been set apart for God. Nothing will prove more truly conducive to holy living. —F rank B. H ole , I belong to Jesus; Blessed, blessed thought ! With His own most precious blood Has riiy soul been bought.

I belong to Jesus ; I am not my own; All I have and all I Shall be His alone.

JANUARY 10 “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Prov. 3:6). Never trust your own judgment. When your common sense is most sure of the rightness of a certain course of action, it will:be best to make assurance doubly sure by lifting up your soul to God, that it may dim with His “No” or glisten with His “Yes.” When voices within or without would hasten you to decide on the strength of your own conclusion, then be careful to refer the whole matter from the lower court of your own judgment to the su preme tribunal of God’s. If there is any doubt or hesitation left after such refer ence, be sure that as yet the time has not come for you to understand all God’s will. Under .such circumstances—wait. If you trust God:absolutely, it is for Him to give you clear directions as to what you should do. And when the'time, for action arrives, He will have given you such unmistakable indications of His will that you will not be able to mistake them or err therein. Should our path be rough and thorny, Give us grace meet for the journey; Then when life is over, | Open wide Thy door.” !—F. B. M eyer . i sea 14:5). In a great variety of ways, God encour ages His people. He reveals Himself to them under many aspects and characters. God knows well that under certain condi tions His people become, spiritually, parch ed and faint and weary. The “fruits” that should be abundant are meager and sparse, i They sigh and are sad. Just then, God ; Himself comes to them as the dew, to be : to them all they need ; so that there may at : once be refreshment, revival, fruitfulness. ! We are told that on cloudy nights there is no dewfall. Ah, yes, and when clouds come between the soul and God, when “earth-born clouds arise” and hide Him from our eyes, we lose the dew. No, there must be “nothing between.” The earth- born clouds cause our souls to remain parched and sterile. Then we suffer loss. Then, too, there is no dew when the night is stormy. Let the wind arise and blow fiercely, whether from East, West, North, “Order Thou our way ... All our earthly stay; (Ho- JANUARY 11 “I will be as the dew unto Israel’’,
