Beginning on September 14, the OPP has been using its social media platforms to issue public education campaigns to remind people to be careful about pocket dials to 9-1-1 and to be aware of numbers they can call for non-urgent matters instead of the 9-1-1 dispatch. Dispatchers must take every call seriously, therefore every unintentional call received must be given the time of day to assess, which can in turn take away time from an actual urgent 9-1-1 call. Out of the 58 unwarranted calls received by 9-1-1 dispatch in the last month in Russell

The Ontario Provincial Police recently issued a news release cautioning against unintentional or pocket dialsmade to 9-1-1 and announcing the launch of a new cam- paign, #KnowWhenToCall, this fall, in order to educate the public on the significance of unintentional calls to the 9-1-1 dispatch. At least 58 calls, which were either unin- tentional or not to be classified as an emer- gency, weremade to 9-1-1 in the last 30 days in Russell County. Out of those 58 calls, seven came fromEmbrun, six fromThe Nation and

More paramedics The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council approved a resolution during its Sept. 27 session for the counties to add two more paramedic positions to the ambulance services’ roster. The decision is due to an increase in the number of critical emergency callouts. The roster addition will be included in the 2018 budget draft. – Gregg Chamberlain

Russell Township begins budget discussions This first draft of the 2018 budget for Russell Township was presented to council during its last meeting on October 2. The said budget forecasts an overall tax increase of 1.5%. Further discussions are to be held at the set budget working day sessions on October 18 and 19. Among other things, changes to the user fee schedules, as usually reviewed, will be presented during these public working sessions. Mayor Pierre Leroux highlighted that a tax increase of 1% represents an additional revenue of about $108,000 for the municipality. For the planned increase this year, an average household of $320,617 in assessment would be seeing an increase of $24. – Vicky Charbonneau The Rockland detachment of the OPP also strongly encourages the use of its program Crime Stoppers, in which residents can call 613-233-TIPS to relay any tips or suspicious activities.Throughout the province, the OPP has received more than 142,130 9-1-1 calls from January 1 to June 30, 2017. In 2016, the OPP received 299,100 calls, of which over 2000 were pocket dials and over 30,000 remained as unknown wireless calls. —photo fournie County, 10 of these calls were confirmed as coming fromyoung children playing with a cell phone. Amongst the calls was also one person asking for the bank holiday hours, one person asking for directions, and at least two accidental pocket dials. The OPP is reminding residents that 9-1-1 calls are reserved for those requiring police, fire or medical assistance. All non- emergency situations should be reported to 1-888-310-1122 and any inquiries about road conditions or closures should be relayed to 5-1-1.
