American Consequences - December 2020

AD #0 Re: The Long, Cold Winter Ahead for Small Businesses Great article re Covid Closures. Just a note of appreciation from a Canadian to acknowledge your appearances on Tucker Carlson. Thanks for your straightforward sensible answers on the political front. – Andrew Simpson Buck Sexton Response: Andrew, thanks very much for your kind words about my article and appearances on Carlson’s show (I think “Buck and Tuck” would be a great name for a future on air collaboration). Please download the Buck Sexton Show podcast sometime. It’s available every weekday for free wherever you listen to podcasts – and tell Canadian friends! Looking forward to more American Consequences ! – Doug S. P.J. O’Rourke Response: Doug, your Grandaddy spoke the truth! And I agree with your disagreement. I hated saying, “Leaders should at least give the appearance of knowing what to do.” Unfortunately, it’s a truth of human psychology about leadership. I’d love to change human psychology. Wouldn’t we all? But – as I was telling Linda, above – the best I can do is provide “human Xanax” or maybe if I’m in top form, “human laughing gas.” Buck, you are absolutely right about the death of small businesses if another round of lockdowns takes place. You hinted in your article but I think all businesses need to resist. Keep your doors open at full capacity. It would be even better if they incorporated a no mask mandate but I digress. At least make it optional for the fools that think a mask provides one shred of protection. This

Trump, regardless of his occasional crude manner, has always had the best interest of the everyday American at the center of his policy making, and for my taste, that is all I require in my leader. – Richard W. P.J. O’Rourke Response: Richard, you aren’t wrong about that “never.” And I don’t think you’re wrong about the core motivation of Trump’s policymaking, even when I objected to some of it, especially the xenophobia. I don’t like the guy, but I don’t hate him. And I’m guessing I’ll like the new guy even less. One thing I think you and I will agree on is that we’re in no danger of getting “a heartless piece of AI hardware” with the Biden administration. He’s got the “artificial” part covered, but the “intelligence” is another matter. I read the editorials each time they appear, but this had the added consequence of actually calming the angst post election!! It brought a level of thought new to me!! Thank you!! – Linda S. P.J. O’Rourke Response: Linda, just think of me as a “human Xanax.” Kudos, P. J. and staff. American Consequences is outstanding. One small disagreement if I may; P. J. you wrote “Leaders should at least give the appearance of knowing what to do.” I would far rather have leaders admit “Damned if I know!” rather than assail my intelligence with impenetrable layers of metabolic byproduct that serve only to funnel me into their inevitable agenda. As Granddaddy used to say, “It’s not so much being lied to I detest, it’s their belief I’m stupid enough to believe them.”
