CHAMPLAIN TOWNSHIP HERITAGE PLAN TABLED FOR NOW GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

of local knowledge about a site, including oral and written history and local stories and folklore. A heritage advisory committee would help with creating the guidelines for the registry to determine whether or not a proposed building or site has heritage value. Once the registry guidelines are approved, council could decide whether to disband the advisory committee or keep it in place to help with recommendations for future additions to the registry. Laforest told council that the proposed municipal registry “is not intended to prevent development” but is meant “to celebrate our heritage.”

A proposal for a heritage advisory com- mittee for Champlain Township is not on the table for now. “There is a lot of interest in heritage,” said Jennifer Laforest, township chief planner, when she presented a report during council’s June 22 session.

The proposed municipal heritage registry would list buildings and properties that have significant local heritage value but a property owner would still be able to do renovation or demolition work on the site if desired. Council voted to receive Laforest’s report and table the issue of creating a heritage registry and a heritage advisory committee for more detailed discussion in the future. The report included proposals for creating a heritage registry for the township and a heritage advisory committee to help develop guidelines for recommended additions to the list. Laforest noted that the report does not propose for now creating the same kind of registry outlined in the Ontario Heritage Act. The list, Laforest noted in her report, would be the “first step towards a heritage protection program” but it would be limited to creation of a database of properties and buildings that have historic value or include architectural or cultural features that have historic significance. Creating the list would involve research MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TO BRUCE BARTON

FOUR-VEHICLE MVA Police responded to an incident on Long Sault Bridge involving four vehicles early in the afternoon June 23. Minor injuries were reported resulting from the accident. The accident occured in the Quebec-bound lanes and traffic was backed up into Hawkesbury’s downtown area until the accident site was cleared.

Bruce Barton was a member of the Vankleek Hill Fire Station for all of his life, both as rookie fireman and as its long-serving fire chief before he retired. Barton passed away earlier this year and Champlain Township council decided during its June 22 session to honour the memory his service to the community by renaming the Vankleek Hill station after him. —photo Gregg Chamberlain

—photo Gregg Chamberlain
