Feeding her soul through volunteering

“I would like to go back to the Dominican and volunteer at the orphanage where I spent time on previous trips,” she said. This energetic, and ambitious young woman feels there are many changes that are needed in our world today. “I believe that any changes that need to be done to really accomplish anything significant needs to be done by our government.” “I can easily say I am a political junky or nerd. I think it is very unfortunate how little people care about politics. The decisions governments make impacts all of our lives. I wish people would just pay a little more attention, get a little educated on political issues and vote.” Hebert believes that the greatest Canadi- an was Tommy Douglas. “He accomplished so much for our country, had such a passion for change, love for people and their well- being. This is a man I look up to and would love to sit down and converse with him.” When asked what being successful means to her, Hebert is quick to say: “I will know I had a successful life, once I am certain that I have made a permanent impact on the life of the people of this community, province, and even our country. I feel I can accom- plish this one day with a life in politics.” For now Hebert is content with helping people in many ways, through her work and in volunteering. “If I could say one thing to young people, it would be to get involved in your commu- nity. It is very important to be part of some- thing bigger than yourself. Volunteering is twofold, you are helping others, and you are feeding your soul. It’s a really great feeling.”

When Carilyne Hebert was 15 years old she had the opportunity to participate in her first of three humanitarian trips to the Dominican Republic. The experiences changed her life, and she owes her success today to the time she spent in the impov- erished nation. Today, the 24-year-old looks back on this experience realizing how much she learned from the people she met. “I realized early on how lucky and spoiled we are,” said Hebert. “These people have next to nothing, but live an incredibly hap- py life. Family and friends are the things they hold most dear to them. When you see that you reflect on your own life and those lives around you. “ “We have flat screen televisions, fancy phones in our pockets, food on our tables and we are a miserable population. “ “Nothing is good enough, and we always want more. We take our personal relation- ships for granted and cherish our things more than our families.” Hebert moved to Cornwall from Alexan- dria at age 12. She comes from a small fam- ily, and she credits her family with helping her become who she is. In her parents she saw, at a young age, a strong work ethic. Additionally her mom was a very caring and passionate person who was very much involved as a member of her community. Hebert recalls how her mother would in- volve her in the events and committees she volunteered with. “I believe my social activ- ism really started back then, and I am grate- ful for the many times I was ‘voluntold’ by my mother to participate From a young age Hebert knew she want- ed to help people, so it was only natural when she thought she would jump into a career of international development and work in developing countries. However she soon realized that we have a large popula- tion living in similar situations of poverty in our own country. Therefore she decided spending a career helping the people of our community would make an impact on their lives. Robyn Guindon Pharmacie Ltée. A life changing experience at the age of 15 set Carilyne Hebert on the path of helping the less fortunate.

“I knew if I was going to work 40 hours a week, I wanted to make sure my time was well spent making a difference,”said Hebert. As she was finishing her post-secondary education in a business program at St. Law- rence College, the opportunity to work for the Agape Centre was offered to her.“I spent almost two years there, and the things I was able to do and accomplish were amazing. The people I met, and the experiences I had will stay with me forever.” Hebert currently works with Contact

North, which is an organization that pro- vides access to education in northern com- munities. Hebert also works as a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters, where she has been recognized for her contributions. She has been a big sister for the last four years and is quick to say that while this experience has been great for her little sister, it has also made a big impact on her own life. Hebert has also sponsored for the past six years a little boy in the Dominican Republic.
