D-DAYINAFRICA!
depicts the situation of turmoil and unrest when the people had no place for God (vv. 5, 6). The exhortation, therefore, in view of all this, is for Asa to be strong and to look for the favor of God which is always forthcoming to those who walk humbly before the Lord (2 Chron. 7:14). The Response of Asa vv. 8-12 Asa showed himself to be a man who wanted to do God’s will. His response to the prophet’s word was immediate. He took courage, he put away the idols from the land of his dominion and restored the altar of sacrifice (v. 8). Moreover, he gathered the people of his kingdom to gether in order that they might offer sac rifice unto the Lord (w . 9-11). Then they engaged in a service of dedication unto the Lord, pledging themselves to seek after the divine will with all dili gence (v. 12). It appears to have been akin to a national revival. In what was done upon this occasion we have a splen did demonstration of what true godliness consists. It has both negative and positive aspects. First, there was the putting away of the things that defile (v. 8). Second, there was the putting on of the things of righteousness (v. 12). This twofold as pect of the Christian life is carefully set forth by Paul in Colossians 3. True god liness is impossible apart from these two aspects. Helps For the Children The Strength of a King 2 Chron. 14, 15 MEMORY VERSE: "Help us, O Lord our God; for we rest [rely] on thee . . ." 2 Chron. 14:11. After the time that the children of Israel were divided into two separate kingdoms, each with its own king, many different men ruled God’s people. Most of these were wicked kings who made their own plans and refused to rule as God desired. God’s Word says of some of these kings, “He did that which was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God.” Each time that a king asked God for wis dom and strength, God’s people prospered and were happy. Asa was one of the kings whose life pleased God. He de stroyed the idols which some of the Is raelites were worshiping and caused the people to obey God’s laws. When enemies came against Asa and his people, they prayed to their God for help and victory. God promised that as long as they lis tened to His voice and obeyed Him they would have joy and peace. During Asa’s reign as king, God’s people were true to Him. The secret of Asa’s success and strength was the fact that he depended upon God at all times. Part of his prayer would be a splendid prayer for every Christian boy and girl: “ Help us, O Lord our God, for we rest [depend] upon thee.” Whenever those who know the Lord Jesus need wis dom, strength, or any other thing ,to be provided, He has promised to provide that need. Those who like Asa trust in God rather than in themselves or in their friends, will find that He always is faithful in answering their prayer and in giving them joy because they know Him. END.
