Business Events Tasmania STUART NETTLEFOLD Business Events Tasmania CEO

I am pleased to share the news that Tasmania recorded the strongest year ever for conference activity last financial year, according to Tasmanian Visitor Survey figures for year ending June 2016. During the 2015-16 financial year, 45,200 delegates visited Tasmania for the purpose of attending a conference or business event. This figure equates to over 55,000 visitors when partners are included. These visitor figures resulted in over $146 million in direct spend to the Tasmanian economy. The reach of the delegate spend is wide and in analysing how they spend while in Tasmania, the $146 million can be broken down into the following: • $41.92m Pre and post conference activities (including accommodation and touring) • $35.26m Conference activities and functions • $28.39m Accommodation • $16.86m Domestic air travel • $12.98m Dining out, restaurants, meals, food, drinks and social functions • $4.97m Ground transport (car rental, taxis, tours, buses) • $4.27m Shopping • $1.6m Other

I am delighted to say that the future business event demand for Tasmania also appears strong, with figures showing Tasmania continuing to show high appeal as a business event destination. During the 2015-16 financial year Business Events Tasmania secured 120 new events for Tasmania, resulting in a future estimated economic value of $48.3 million. Sixteen of these business events directly relate to Tasmania’s key sector industries and economic drivers. Many of these business events were secured through our reinvigorated Tasmanian Ambassador Program which has allowed us to form strong alliances with Tasmania’s business, education and research communities. A strong membership base allows us to put forward the best of Tasmania’s business event products and services when bidding for an event. With the continued support of our major industry partners, stakeholders and members, I am confident that Tasmania is set to shine even brighter on the national and international business events stage.
