SUSTAINABILITY WITH NWUPC

ECOnnect 26

NWUPC's approved frameworks play a crucial role in helping our members achieve their sustainability targets. Here's how these frameworks contribute to sustainability efforts: Streamlined Procurement Process: NWUPC develops approved frameworks or lists of suppliers that universities can use. These frameworks provide a pre-qualified pool of suppliers who have met certain sustainability criteria. By using these frameworks, universities can streamline their procurement process and ensure that they are working with suppliers who align with their sustainability goals. Sustainable Procurement Strategy: NWUPC has a Sustainable Procurement Strategy with key objectives to help achieve strategic goals. Approved frameworks are designed to support these objectives and enable universities to make sustainable procurement decisions. Addressable Spend Target: NWUPC's portfolio of framework agreements covers significant spend areas for institutions. These frameworks offer best value and demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. By utilising these frameworks, universities can ensure that a significant portion of their procurement spend is directed towards sustainable suppliers and products. Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing: NWUPC collaborates with other higher education purchasing consortia in England to support sustainability efforts. This collaboration helps institutions share best practices, exchange knowledge, and learn from each other's experiences in achieving sustainability targets through collaborative procurement frameworks. Overall, NWUPC's approved frameworks provide universities with a structured approach to sustainable procurement. By utilising these frameworks, universities can make informed purchasing decisions, support sustainable suppliers, and contribute to their sustainability targets. UKUPC PROCUREMENT AWARDS

NWUPC Member, Lancaster University won a deserved award at the recent UK Universities Purchasing Consortia (UKUPC) Conference for their ‘Outstanding Responsible Procurement Initiative’ work on their Procurement and Travel Carbon Dashboard. The Dashboard is an effective reporting tool that utilises the HESCET data along with expenditure information to provide staff with a view of their account code or department’s Scope 3 Emissions. This initiative provides staff with deeper insight into higher-emitting activities and empowers them to make more informed purchasing and business travel decisions. The Procurement and Travel Carbon Dashboard has been designed to influence behaviours in support of the University’s net zero targets and has been led by Larissa Morrish, Lancaster Universities Head of Procurement, with support from a range of colleagues at Lancaster. Larissa gave a presentation about Lancaster's initiative to the UKUPC Conference at Exeter University last month, and was then presented with the award during the conference.

The UK & Ireland Green Gown Awards 2023, in association with UKRI, are delighted to present this year's 102 Finalists, across 15 categories, representing 65 Higher and Further Education Institutions. Their commitment to the sustainability agenda has enabled them to stand out among a competitive pool of entries, showcasing initiatives and projects that are dedicated to shaping a wide range of institutional areas and which are positively impacting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “With another exceptional set of finalists announced I feel both humbled and proud to represent UKRI’s involvement in these awards. While the challenge ahead of us is daunting the innovation, passion and belief across the research and innovation sector is inspiring and I look forward to following the progress of these projects as they help us reach our net zero target.” Alison Robinson Deputy Executive Chair & Director of Corporate Affairs for the Natural Environment Research Council, part of UKRI “The Green Gown Awards are one of the most prestigious ways we recognise impactful and innovative sustainability practice across the further and higher education sectors. They’re not our awards – they’re for the sector, delivered collaboratively in partnership in the UK and globally. In a space where greenwash and sustainability marketing has become prolific, the sector led, peer-reviewed structure of the Green Gown Awards ensures they’re meaningful, transparent, and authentic. We know that the excitement and pride that comes from being a finalist is a great springboard for institutions to engage more people in their sustainability work. But the value of the Green Gown Awards is beyond the individual organisations that are nominated. We look forward to sharing stories about our finalists’ work - providing inspiration, demonstrating impact, and learning from lessons learned along the way.” Charlotte Bonner, CEO, EAUC The Winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony at the Titanic Hotel Liverpool on 30th November. RISE IN SALARY SACRIFICE CAR SCHEMES AS EMPLOYERS LOOK TO STRENGTHEN GREEN POLICIES

With research highlighting that 86% of new graduates only want to work for employers with strong green credentials *1 , it has never been more important for organisations to have a comprehensive sustainability programme in place that benefits employees, the community and environment. Over the last 12 months, NWUPC Sustainable Fleet Solutions Framework supplier Knowles Fleet has seen a marked increase in demand for its greener car schemes as a tax efficient way to offer an attractive staff benefit that cuts carbon emissions and saves money too. Salary sacrifice schemes enable employees to exchange part of their monthly pay in return for a non cash benefit, in this case a new, lower emission car. Staff can save on income tax and National Insurance (NI) contributions, while employers benefit from Class 1 NI savings.

Dan O’Neill, commercial director at Knowles Fleet explains: “Supporting the environment is a key priority, particularly for the younger generation, and should form an important part of every organisation’s strategy, not only to reduce emissions but to attract and retain talent and cut costs. “Transport is one of the biggest sources of emissions but can be a tricky area to tackle, especially when it comes to the privately owned vehicles employees use for work which tend to be older and more polluting. “Salary sacrifice schemes provide a great way to incentivise staff to drive a new, greener car, especially as electric vehicles attract much lower company car tax which adds to the financial savings that can be made.” Each of Knowles’ schemes is tailored to the individual organisation with specific measures to maximise emissions savings. Full carbon reduction reporting is also included to support employers’ net zero commitments.

Dan O’Neill continues: “We want to make it as easy as possible for organisations to run a sustainable car scheme as part of their environmental strategy. That’s why we take care of all the associated administration for both the employer and employee and offer a full range of free support services to help employees transition to lower emission driving.”

Knowles’ electric vehicle (EV) support services include:

Employee webinars to introduce the scheme and discuss any concerns staff may have about transitioning to an EV. On site client ‘Arrive & Drive’ events for employees to test drive electric and lower emission cars and speak with Knowles’ expert team.

Personal shopper calls in which employees can book to discuss vehicle choices and EV driving.

Preferential support with home charging solutions through Knowles’ network of national charge point providers. 'Experience EV’ option which offers employees the chance to take out an EV on a mini lease to see what it is like to live with before they commit. Scheme marketing material to highlight the benefits and financial savings available through the scheme.

Knowles Fleet is an independent, employee owned company committed to reducing its environmental impact and delivering social value. In recognition of this, Knowles has been awarded silver status by EcoVadis, the world’s largest provider of business sustainability ratings.
