JULY 2023

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA If it is July, it is officially summer in Minnesota. Independence Day brings family and friends together for picnics, swimming, camping and, if we are lucky, s’mores. I’m looking forward to spending some time on the St. Croix River with my family, canoeing—and I know my better half will be grilling burgers and brats. July 4th is a day of reflection. Public media provides a space where citizens can access educational civic resources on the issues most impacting our communities. For nearly 40 years, TPT’s Almanac has engaged residents, voters, and policymakers on important community matters. Almanac at the Capitol has given viewers an inside look at the workings of our state government for over 20 years. Our Minnesota Experience history productions – such as Citizen and Jim Crow of the North – help our community better understand how we got to today, and how we can work together to build the community we want in the future. July 4th is a day to remember what unites us. The Great American Recipe airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on TPT 2, and it gives us an opportunity to connect over food, share family stories, and celebrate the many traditions that make up our nation. A Capitol Fourth , a PBS tradition for over 40 years, brings us together in celebration through music and fireworks. You can watch the extravaganza on July 4 on TPT 2 at 7 p.m. In June, TPT hosted the Hype Showcase. Hype empowers local youth in grades 9-12 as media creators. This year’s Hype crew created powerful pieces that spoke about violence in schools, mental health, and representation in the arts. I have no doubt these Hype crew members will continue to share their stories and make great impacts on our community. You can learn more about Hype ’s impact on page 6 and view their projects at tpt.org/dont-believe-the-hype.

The Great American Recipe

Your support is essential to TPT’s efforts to educate citizens and strengthen our community. Thank you for supporting this important work.

Sincerely,

Sylvia Strobel President and CEO, Twin Cities PBS

A Q&A with Hype Crew Members Photos by Uche Iroegbu

Don’t Believe the Hype empowers youth in grades 9-12 as media creators. Hype leverages the power of media-making to help Indigenous, Black, Latina(o), Asian American, and historically unrepresented youth craft their own narratives and amplify their unique voices. The crew members premiered their capstone projects at a showcase event in June, sharing work that examined violence in schools, mental health, and representation in the arts.

What lessons will you be taking with you from Hype ?

We had the chance to sit down with some crew members to learn about Hype’s impact.

Marquan Harper (Twin Cities Academy, St. Paul)

I've always had an idea of what I'm interested in and what I wanted to do. But I never really knew that there was a purpose for what I wanted to do. Now, getting ready for college - knowing that I want to be a Communications major and do minors in Business and Marketing. Being able to have an opportunity, like working at TPT and doing something like this, especially with other young people of color, wouldn't have been anything I would have imagined.

Mira Berndt (Central High School, St. Paul) I don't know if it's a lesson, but I think an impact it had on me was the full circle moment. I like coming to TPT and PBS because I used to watch PBS Kids when I was younger. Demetrius [the Hype crew's TPT mentor] works on SciGirls , which I watched when I was young. And my parents love that show for me because it had young Brown girls and showed girls in fields that are male and white dominated. It is empowering.

What makes Hype special?

Damarj Robinson (Gordon Parks High School, St. Paul)

At Hype I'm able to talk to people my age, and we're able to learn from each other, and then build off that. And that's the best thing. Marquan Harper Hype brings brilliant minds together to interact with each other and hold conversations. In our generation, you can't hold a conversation with people without someone getting triggered to the fact they don't want to converse with you anymore. [In Hype ] we're in a space where we're talking about very sensitive topics, and everyone has their own opinion, and we're able to hear each other out about it. Eh Kyaw Hype didn't have to tell me I belong; they showed that. It isn’t a feeling you get from like, anywhere else. I would have people come up, come sit down here, and then they would also feel like they belong.

Eh Kyaw (Gordon Parks High School, St. Paul)

Read the full interview at tpt.org/hype-crew.

For me, before coming to TPT, it felt like I was kind of in this box. And then when I stepped inside TPT and got to be around people my age and talk about things that are impacting our world, it took me outside of that box. And then I had an open-minded point of view. The world is way bigger than it was in my room. I felt free. I felt a sense of freedom here.

A Minneapolis Homeowner Confronts the Ghost of Housing Segregation By Jessica Prody Photo by Uche Iroegbu

“No person or persons other than of the Caucasian race shall be permitted to occupy said premises or any part thereof.”

Imagine discovering this language in the property description of your dream home, only to realize that, in the earliest chapters of the home’s history, you would have been legally barred from owning it. This is the situation that Minneapolis homeowner Katie Bradbury, a Korean adoptee, found herself in when she viewed her property on a racial covenant map created by the University of Minnesota’s Mapping Prejudice project. After discovering the Twin Cities PBS project, Jim Crow of the North Stories – which uplifts the efforts of activists, municipalities, and everyday Minnesotans to reckon with the legacy of housing segregation in the Twin Cities, Bradbury decided to investigate the property deed of her own home.

“It just it felt gross,” Bradbury said, describing what she discovered on the map. “I came home and went to David [her husband], and said, ‘So, we have a racist house. Did you know that?’”

Prior to the passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968, Bradbury realized that the home she loves would have been off limits during a long period of housing segregation. Upon discovering the covenant, Bradbury investigated what it would take to remove it from the property and submitted her information to Minneapolis’s Just Deeds project, an organization that helps property owners discharge their covenants.

Now that her discharge application has been sent to the City of Minneapolis, Bradbury is planning to educate others in her neighborhood about covenants and the process of discharging them from deeds.

“I think it’s a learning experience for people to realize here are the historical acts our community took to keep a segregated city, and then look at the current impacts of that and ask, ‘What can we do to make it better?”

We will be following Bradbury’s story as the process of discharging her deed continues. Follow along on TPT’s Storyboard blog: tpt.org/storyboard .

As You Age, Meet Yourself Where You Are By Judith Lindbergh

It was dark and cold as I drove over the hill, my son in the passenger seat beside me. At the stop sign, I reached to raise the temperature dial, my hand moving into the green glow of the dashboard light. Suddenly I noticed the strange, serpentine scales: the back of my hand, aging before my eyes.

"Do you see that?" My midlife panic rose up before I could tamp it down.

"What's wrong with your hand?" my son gasped. "It's like a time warp — like what it'll look like when you're really old."

Really old … It's a concept that, increasingly, doesn't feel so far away.

one dad joked about his upcoming "big birthday," exchanging glances when he added "5-0."

“I proudly flaunted my curly, post-COVID gray mane as a fashion statement until one mother whispered, "You'd look ten years younger if you dyed it."

And throughout the weekend, I proudly flaunted my curly, post-COVID gray mane as a fashion statement until one mother whispered, "You'd look ten years younger if you dyed it." It's easy to imagine that we can repel aging for a while. That night of the serpentine scales on my hand, I went home and hit the hand cream hard. But it won't go on forever. It shouldn't and can't. So, as I ease into the adjustments that aging requires, I remember the comment I make at every birthday: "It's better than the alternative." Another day, another ache, another pound, another step from what was to what is to come … Maybe being older isn't so bad.

Coming to terms with aging is like wrestling a bear. You know you cannot win, no matter your skills or precautions. In the early years, there are moments of triumph when someone assumes that you're younger than you are, followed by gradually more frequent moments of denial: "I still look good," segueing slowly into self-flagellation: "Stop fooling yourself," until, finally, those rare moments of graceful acceptance. Perhaps it is easier for me to maintain my denial because I had children quite late. Most of the parents at our sons' college drop-offs were at least a decade younger than my husband and me. It was easy to pretend we fit in. We just kept quiet when

Operation Closet Space: How to Get Your Adult Children’s Stuff Out of Your Home By Kathleen Doheny

My adult son moved out years ago, after college. Now, he's happily married, with two gorgeous children. They live just 10 miles away, so I get to see them often, which I love. Now for the challenge, which you probably guessed was coming. Shaun moved out, but his stuff, or lots of it, has stayed. Old CDs, clothing, college memorabilia, school papers, car cleaning gear, big black ramps for getting under the car that I didn't buy and don't plan to use. The no-closet-space issue has been an issue for, well, years. I have a 1,100-square foot cracker box I feel lucky to have, but it gets cramped when you collect things over the decades. And I have a shoe habit! So began — or rather continued — Operation Closet Space. Deadlines I had suggested for going through, sorting, tossing, taking away had come and gone. Besides the foot stomp, what else works? Here are some how-to tips from those in-the-know who've been in your shoes: • “Give your kids a deadline,” suggested Jeanne Taylor, an organizational expert who runs tailorly, a San Francisco Bay Area home organizational service. “If they don’t get their stuff out by the agreed upon date, tell them you will donate their things.” Be realistic about the timeline, follow up and don’t fold. • For far-away adult children, text photos of their stuff and ask them to mark up the items they don’t want, Taylor said. Box up the rest, ship it or hold it for their pickup.

• “Decide who is having the problem about getting rid of the stuff,” Taylor said. She finds many parents are sentimental and blaming their kids for their lack of space when it’s them who can’t part with the stuff. • Keep perspective. The accumulated stuff issue isn’t just one of younger adults. Most of us collect too much and discard too little.

• Forget the “nagging is no good” advice. Sometimes it works.

• Break it down into phases: sorting, deciding, packing up, throwing away and donating.
