Annual Bean Festival gets bigger and better
two dozen entries are expected at present highlighting traditional family recipes and all festival participants get to vote on which recipe is the best on the table. Sept. 10 is the deadline for contestants to register in either the professional, amateur, or social categories. Advance entry bracelets for the Bean Festival are on sale now at La Binerie and Dépanneur Léger in Plantagenet and at Dépanneur Les Beaux Frères in St-Isidore. Bracelet reserves are also possible by phone to La Binerie at 673-4383. Details on the Best Beans contest rules are available online at www.festivaldelabine.ca.
ter this year as organizers expand the event to a full weekend on Sept. 21 and 22 and also bring in another piece of the region’s cultural heritage with lumberjack sports to celebrate the logging industry that helped build many of the towns along both sides of the Ottawa River and also created real-life Canadian legends like Louis-Joseph Mont- ferrand and his tall-tale fictional American counterpart, Paul Bunyan. “Welcome to Plantagenet, the Bean Capi- tal,”said Alain Lapensée, owner of La Binerie catering service in Plantagenet and one of the organizers and sponsors of the festival. “We love our beans and we’re proud of it.
That’s why they are the stars of the festival.” Baked beans remain the focus of the cel- ebration. Sharing the limelight with the food at the festival this year are both log- ger sports and strongman competitions for amateurs wanting to pit their might and muscle, under the guidance and direction of local experts. The two-day festival pro- gram also features standup comedy shows and continuous live music along with a vari- ety of other family-friendly activities. Local amateur and professional cooks also have a chance once more of showing off their talents in the My Grandmother’s Beans Are the Best! competition. More than

PLANTAGENET | Prescott-Russell has some of the most beautiful scenery in all of On- tario and it’s available all year round for just the price of a new calendar. The Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail Group (PRRTG) and Prescott-Russell Tour- ism (PRT) with their partners at Barnyard Studio in Rockland are bringing out the 2014 edition of the Prescott-Russell Recre- ational Trail Calendar and they are offering a chance for some sneak previews of the photographic artwork that may grace the pages of next year’s edition. They also want some help deciding what scenic view of the region will be the cover photo for next year’s calendar release. The PRTrail calendar projectmeets several targets. It helps publicize the natural beauty of the region in general and the cycling and walking trail in particular, promote use of the trail for a variety of recreation ranging from cycling to bird watching. It also pro- vides photography students with Barnyard Studio an opportunity to put their skills to work and gain experience both in nature photography and in public exhibitions of their work. More than a dozen photographers pre- sented their trail portfolios for review and consideration for the 2014 calendar. Also calendar project organizer Lynne S. Rollin, Nadine Lamoureux of Barnyard Studio, and photo artist Francine Carrière have each submitted two photos for consideration as the calendar’s cover. The public gets to select the winner out of the six contenders during a special calendar photo preview ex- hibition at Barnyard Studio at 3122 Baseline Road, on Aug. 11, from 1 to 9 p.m. The final edition of the 2014 calendar becomes available in November with 5000 copies presented to participating photog- raphers, members of the PR Trail commit- tee, and project sponsors for distribution. For more information on how to obtain a 2014 PR Trail calendar phone Louise Bis- sonette at the PR Trail Committee office at 673-1820 or Barnyard Studio at 857-6539, or email sentiertrail@prescott-russell.on.ca.
