Dr. Niles Attends First P.E.O. Gathering by Jane Graebner, FI, Lewis Center, Ohio On Monday May 2, Dr. Stefanie Niles graciously accepted a last minute invitation to attend her first P.E.O. gathering. Dr. Niles, previously vice president at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, is now the 13th president of Cottey College. Chapter FI, Lewis Center, Ohio, presented a program introducing Dr. Niles to our P.E.O. Sisterhood.
Over the past decade, much of the conversation around the role of higher education in society has changed. Many high school students enter the workforce, attend technical schools or pursue certificate programs upon graduation. Emphasizing the value of a college degree and the benefits of a Cottey education will become more critical in the coming years. While this challenge may seem significant, Dr. Niles sees a vast opportunity for Cottey to stand out amongst its peers. “Cottey’s mission to educate women to contribute to a global society is so relevant today given the world we live in,” said Dr. Niles. “The skills needed to manage the challenges of our rapidly changing, increasingly technological and interconnected world are best realized through a college education. The college experience allows students to develop strong critical thinking and communication skills, enhance their problem-solving abilities and work effectively with people of varying backgrounds and experiences.” Cottey’s fall classes begin on August 23. Dr. Niles said she is looking forward to her first term welcoming students and working alongside the faculty and staff to continue to build on the foundation that was in place, “Virginia Alice Cottey Stockard had a distinctive vision for Cottey. I feel a strong sense of responsibility and determination to ensure that her vision continues to impact women for generations to come.”
