but something sweet and pretty, like ‘My Wild Irish Rose.’ “You see, little fella,” he put down the gun and covered his face with his hands and his voice came muffled through his fingers, “I wronged that man and he’s coming singing to get me. I ’ve never told anyone this. It’s kept me from con­ fessing Christ, though I do believe. Once in Chicago in an awful wicked place I shot a man. He tried to shoot me first but I shot him and — killed him. Singing Jack was my friend then. But I was a coward. Jack was standing there and after seeing what I had done I thrust the gun into Jack’s hand and ran. They arrested Jack and no matter how he argued the jury wouldn’t believe him. The only witness was the proprietor and I don’t think he realized which of us fired the gun. Anyway he testified against Jack. “In the old days when folks heard Jack coming down the street sing­ ing they’d say, ‘There goes Jack, going to beat up someone.’ It seemed like the singing instead of warning folks only kind of paralyzed them. Made them like a bird stalked by an old swamp snake — just can’t move. Anyway, that’s Jack coming and I know it isn’t a beating he aims to give me. It’s more. “Little fella, they sent Singing Jack up for manslaughter and now they’ve paroled him. I got a letter from him the other day. He said he was coming to call on me to thank me for what I ’d done. I know what it is I did. And I know how he aims to thank me. That’s why I have the gun here, so I can shoot him before he shoots me. But, little fella, you are right. I ’ve already killed one man. How can I kill another? Maybe Singing Jack will see a little boy here with me and have mercy. But I reckon I know Singing Jack better than that!” The singing was loud now. It was like you were sitting in the front row at church listening to the singer in the pulpit. None of our men ever sang like that though. Then the voice came out sweet and clear — speaking this time. “Hiram Greene, a r e you in there?” “Yes, I am, Jack,” called out Hiram. He didn’t take his hands down from his face to reach for the
