Lace Up and Stay Safe A Legal Perspective on Running and Road Safety
MALLOY LAW OFFICES, LLC
Every year, the first Wednesday in June rolls around, and more people start lacing up their sneakers, heading outside, and celebrating something simple but powerful. Global Running Day started as a way to encourage people of all ages and fitness levels to get moving. It actually grew out of National Running Day in the U.S. and expanded worldwide around 2016, turning into a global initiative that promotes health, community, and accessibility in running. I love what this day represents because it’s not about being the fastest or running the farthest, but rather showing up. Whether you jog around your block or train for a marathon, it is a reminder that the road belongs to all of us. But as a personal injury attorney, I also know there is a harsher reality that runners and pedestrians face every day. When a Run Turns Into an Accident If a car hits you while running or walking, your life can change in an instant. I have sat across from clients who went out for a routine run and ended up dealing with broken bones, head injuries, or months of recovery. It’s heartbreaking because in many of these cases, the crash could have been avoided.
you may have the right to pursue compensation for your injuries. This can include lost wages, medical bills, pain and suffering, and in some cases, future care costs. Here is the key concept I explain to my clients: negligence. If a driver was careless, distracted, speeding, or failed to yield, they can be held legally responsible. Even if you were partially at fault, many states follow comparative negligence rules. That means you can recover damages, though your compensation could be reduced based on your share of fault. Steps to Take After an Accident First, seek medical attention right away. Even if you feel okay, injuries like concussions or internal trauma are not always obvious. Second, call the police and ensure an official report is filed. Third, gather information if you can. That includes the driver’s details, witness names, and photos of the scene. Please do not brush it off. I have seen too many people try to tough it out, only to realize later their injuries are serious. Why This Matters to Me I do this work because I see how quickly lives can be disrupted. One moment you are enjoying a run, the next you are dealing with insurance companies and medical bills, and you shouldn’t have to handle that alone. Global Running Day is about freedom and movement, and it’s my job to protect that freedom when something goes wrong. If You Need Help, Let’s Talk If you or someone you love has been hit by a car while running or walking, reach out. Drivers have a duty to pay attention, follow traffic laws, and watch for pedestrians. Runners and walkers also have responsibilities, but the law generally recognizes that a person on foot is far more vulnerable than someone in a vehicle.
Your Legal Rights as a Pedestrian No matter what state you are in, certain legal principles apply across the board. If you are hit by a car,

These Brilliant Time Hacks May Help Feeling Busy but Not Productive?
Time has a way of slipping away. You start the day with a plan and end it wondering where the hours went. The problem usually isn’t laziness; it’s distractions and competing priorities. Fortunately, a few simple, research-backed strategies can help you stay focused, organized, and productive. Work in focused 25-minute stretches. One of the most effective ways to stay productive is by working in short, structured intervals. The popular Pomodoro Technique breaks work into 25-minute sessions, followed by short breaks. This structure helps prevent mental fatigue and keeps your brain engaged. Short work sprints also make large tasks feel manageable. Instead of stressing about completing an entire project, you simply commit to focusing for the next 25 minutes. After you get started, the momentum carries you forward. Use time blocking to plan your day. Time blocking is a powerful strategy that involves dividing your day into dedicated
segments for specific tasks. Rather than relying on a long to-do list, you assign tasks to actual time slots in your schedule. This approach reduces decision fatigue because you already know what you should be working on at a given time. It also limits multitasking, which can drain mental energy and lower overall productivity. Batch similar tasks together. Constantly switching between different types of tasks can slow you down and make it harder to concentrate. Task batching solves this problem by grouping similar activities. For instance, instead of checking emails throughout the day, you might respond to them during one or two scheduled periods. By completing similar tasks in one session, you reduce distractions and create a smoother workflow. Prioritize what matters. Not every task on your list deserves the same attention. Prioritization methods, such as sorting tasks by urgency and importance,
help you focus on work that makes an impact. When you concentrate on high-value tasks first, you avoid spending too much time on small or low-priority responsibilities that don’t contribute much to your overall goals. Schedule breaks to recharge. It may seem counterproductive, but taking breaks is essential for maintaining productivity. Short pauses throughout the day help your brain recover and maintain focus over longer periods. Stepping away from your desk, stretching, or taking a quick walk can refresh your mind and prevent burnout. Often, a brief break is exactly what you need to return to your work with better concentration.
From Paper Files to Digital Practice THE EVOLUTION OF PERSONAL INJURY LAW
Not long ago, practicing personal injury law meant stacks of paperwork, constant office visits, and long delays in communication. Today, that picture looks completely different. Technology has dramatically reshaped how attorneys connect with clients, build cases, and move claims forward. What used to take days can now happen in minutes, and the impact is felt in nearly every part of the process. A Digital Shift in Client Communication One of the greatest changes is how attorneys interact with clients. In the past, face-to-face meetings were the norm. Now, much of that communication happens via video and phone calls, as well as on secure digital platforms. In fact, it is not uncommon for attorneys to handle most of a case without ever meeting a client in person until the very end, sometimes when it is time to pick up a settlement check. This shift has made legal services more convenient and accessible. Clients can stay informed without rearranging their
schedules, and attorneys can provide updates quickly and efficiently. The result is a smoother experience that keeps cases moving without unnecessary delays. Efficiency and Speed in Case Management Beyond communication, technology has transformed how cases are managed. Electronic signatures, cloud-based files, and instant document sharing have reduced the need for physical paperwork. Tasks that once slowed cases down can now be completed almost instantly. This efficiency allows us to spend less time on administrative work and more time focusing on strategy, negotiation, and advocacy. In personal injury law, where details matter, and timing can influence outcomes, that shift is incredibly valuable. Smarter Vehicles, Stronger Evidence Advancements in vehicle technology have also changed the legal landscape. Many modern cars now come equipped with
cameras, sensors, and
data recording systems. These features can
capture critical details before, during, and after an accident. Instead of relying solely on witness statements, objective data often helps tell the full story. This not only strengthens cases but also improves safety and shapes how insurance companies evaluate claims. A Look Ahead As we recognize Trial Technology Day on June 7, it is clear that innovation is not slowing down. The tools available today are already transforming personal injury law, and future advancements will continue to push the field forward. Train Your Brain With ‘Worry Time’
A SIMPLE HABIT TO CALM STRESS
You know that feeling when your brain starts planning for every worst-case scenario before you’ve even finished breakfast? Or when you lie down at night and your thoughts suddenly remember every bill, test, and “what if” all at once? If so, you aren’t alone, but there’s a counterintuitive trick that may help with that kind of mental spinning. Therapists suggest that people schedule “worry time.” The approach comes from cognitive- behavioral therapy and is used as a practical way to keep stress from running the show. The idea is straightforward: Once a day, for a short block of time, you sit down and let your mind bring up the stuff you keep circling. During the rest of the day, instead of wrestling with every new “what if,” you write a note about your worries and set it aside for later. Little by little, your worries start showing up more during that set time and less when you are trying to work, relax, or sleep. To get started, pick a block of time, about 15–30 minutes. It could be right before dinner or before you watch a show, but early evenings are often best. Scheduling the block then gives you enough time to accumulate your worries during the day, but also leaves you with time afterward to decompress and relax. It’s also
helpful to set a timer and pick an uncomfortable spot to sit so you aren’t tempted to stay longer than the allotted time. When worry time starts, go through every item on your list and ask yourself, “Is there anything I can actually do about this?” If the answer is yes, write down what it is and how you can work toward it. Otherwise, practice letting the worry go and move on to the next one. The goal of all this isn’t to ignore real problems. It’s ultimately about
freeing mental space so you can be more present and productive during the day and less likely to experience the harmful effects of stress.

The Summer Solstice Marks a Turning Point Most People Miss
JUNE 21 COMES AND GOES But It Changes More Than You Think
Why It Changes Every Year This isn’t random. It comes down to the way Earth moves through space. Our planet orbits the sun at an angle of about 23.5 degrees, and that tilt creates our seasons. In June, the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the sun, letting sunlight hit it more directly and for a longer stretch each day. The solstice marks the exact moment when that tilt is working most in our favor. What It Means for Us People have been paying attention to this day for a long time. Ancient civilizations carefully tracked it, building structures that aligned with sunrise or sunset at the solstice. For them, it was incredibly meaningful because it marked growth, harvest cycles, and survival. Even now, without relying on the sun to plan crops, something is still very
June 21 usually passes without much fuss, but did you know that it marks a shift you can actually feel? After this day, the sun hangs around longer, the evening stretches out, and suddenly there’s no rush to head inside. It’s not a holiday, and most people don’t circle it on a calendar, but it’s one of the clearest reminders that the seasons are always moving, whether we notice or not. What the Summer Solstice Actually Is The summer solstice is the point when the Northern Hemisphere gets the most direct sunlight it will see all year. That’s why it brings the longest day and the shortest night. The sun rises early, sets late, and seems to take its time crossing the sky. After this day, the balance slowly shifts, and June 21 is the peak.
grounding about knowing exactly where we are in the year.
A Moment to Notice Nothing dramatic happens on the summer solstice, and there's no sudden change you can point to, but if you pay attention, it’s there in the extra light, in how late the sky stays bright. It’s a small reminder that time moves in patterns, not straight lines, and this is the point where the year quietly starts to turn again.
