cant Delaware Valley demoli- tion projects are in the quarry, such as the Blue Route and the old convention center. In 2010, as the site completed its lifespan as a clean landfill, David Crockett Jr. knew there was plenty of opportunity to develop the site above ground. With the top consultants in the area, the team solved the traffic, layout, environmental, legal, engineering, geotechni- cal and construction issues that come with a historic property in a dense in-fill area. The center will feature a 120,000 s/f Lowes Home Im- provement Store and an 82,000 s/f. Twp, Pennsylvania are being transformed into 250,000 s/f shopping center to be known as Quarry Center. Located in one of the region’s most densely developed areas, the site has long been coveted for develop- ment. Numerous developers and retailers have tried to take on the geologically chal- lenged, in-fill site, but it wasn’t until Eureka! Ventures, an Indianapolis based Develop- ment Company, partnered with the Crockett family that the endeavor became reality. As a result of hurricaneAgnes, in 1972, the granite quarry was flooded and no longer viable as a working quarry. David Crockett Sr., saw this eyesore as an opportunity and acquired the property. The massive hole first had to be drained, then could be productive again as a clean landfill. For almost 30 years the quarry was filled with ap- proximately 7.3 million cubic yards of soil, brick, concrete and old asphalt. Many signifi-

Retail Design Competition and received the Gold Award for Mixed-Use Redevelopment Project and explained there are several aspects to this project that make it unique. The site was formerly a quarry, which was filled in over a span of about 30 years from a depth of 285 feet, and the fill within the quarry was never mechanically compacted, so that was one of the largest challenges facing this project. Significant explo- ration and testing by Earth En-
gineering, secured the ability to create a stable foundation for the future buildings. The site also required some rather not-so-common approvals. A pre-cast arch bridge sys- tem will connect the site via Kohl’s access to West Chester Pike. This connection will benefit both centers, as well as the public. Construction began in Spring of 2012. Giant and Lowe’s are anticipated to celebrate Grand Opening in Spring 2013. n
