Baptist Reynolds Hospice House
Designed to provide hospice care in a home-like environment, this facility is constructed of light gauge steel and wood-framed hybrid structure with stone and brick veneer and wood siding. High-end interior finishes further assist in creating the warm, comfortable environment for residents. EMJ constructed the administration building, bereavement center, and 24 private patient rooms with outdoor patios. The rooms allow ease of movement for residents in wheelchairs, access to the outdoors, and oxygen connections that are camouflaged behind artwork. The residence also includes large group living areas with fireplaces, a children’s playroom, chapel, café, spa, a full-service kitchen, and outdoor gardens. EMJ was brought on board the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House project late in the planning phase. Our team’s first step was to ask questions regarding the scope and thoroughly analyze the initial plans. After discussing with the design team, we questioned why the fire marshal was requesting two systems and learned that the State Health Department determined that the fire protection design needed to be separated into two systems in order to serve the patient and administration wings independently. With a potential budget overrun and extension on the project timeline due to the fire systems, the EMJ team researched alternative options and brought the client a design solution that allowed for one fire protection system throughout the building. The solution was approved and construction proceeded with minimal impact. As a result of our team’s research and creative solutions, the schedule was maintained, and the client was provided significant cost savings. 10
