May 2022 Anchorlines

Commodore As the 2022 “High Season” comes to a close, and many Members head for the delights of summer in New England, the Northern United States in general, or world travel, it’s a good time to look back upon a successful first four months of 2022 for your Marco Island Yacht Club. With the pandemic trailing off into (hopefully) the rear-view mirror, Members took to the Club and boating events with gusto. With several new Members contributing their boats, our Sunset Cruises had record numbers of happy Crew and Captains, enjoying idyllic weather, captivating sunsets, and exciting buffet cuisine, all under the capable leadership of Vice Commodore Henry Stanley.

Day Cruises were brought to new heights under the command of Past Commodore Jeff Comeaux, who wrestled with finicky venues, dicey weather and a shortage of boats to nevertheless create amazing and unforgettable Member experiences, like the Day Cruise to the Rod and Gun Club in Everglades City, which attracted a record number of participants. The next Day Cruise is on May 3 to the Naples Yacht Club, get your reservations in now! The recent Member Survey revealed that the most popular event in the Club is the monthly Boater’s Night, re- imagined and masterfully orchestrated by Rear Commodore Paul Soden, with interesting and important programs full of interest and information for everyone, not just for boaters. The MIYC Youth Sailing Program, with Fleet Captain Sail Dwyn vonBereghy at the helm, has ordered five new Opti boats for the young sailors, and will train up to 145 students this summer with 5 instructors. This is by far the most impactful sailing or boating program for kids anywhere in Southwest Florida. All our Members can be proud of what learning these valuable sailing and life skills is doing for these wonderful kids! Melanie Kraemer, your Port Captain, has been busy welcoming FCYC member boats to our sparkling new Riverside Marina. Almost every arriving yachtsman has been effusive in their praises of our beautiful marina facility, and the extraordinary warmth of the welcome they receive from Melanie, who meets each one of them personally with a bag of goodies and a jumbo helping of enthusiasm and goodwill, no matter what day of the week or what time they dock. She is truly an Ambassador for your Club, and she’s the envy of many other clubs in the FCYC network, who can only wish they had a Port Captain like Melanie. The MIYC Summer Cruise Calendar contains Day Cruises to Dolphin Tiki Hut in June and the Deep Lagoon in August. Next season starts off in splendid style when over 70 members on 11 or more boats head for Key West on November 1. A brand new event is planned for November 14 th : The first Great MIYC Lobster Bake, a Five- Star catered luxury event in which you can be served champagne and lobster on a pristine sandy beach by uniformed waiters as you are caressed by gentle tropic breezes – truly a luxury experience! Stay tuned for more details about this fabulous new event! If you are here in May, don’t miss the chance to mingle with fellow yachtsmen from all over Florida in mid-May as MIYC hosts the FCYC statewide meeting. A limited number of reservations are available, so book your reservations now just call the Club for information. For those of you who are staying around all summer, there will be plenty to do and to enjoy. For those who are taking wing to other parts, have a great time, and we’ll see you in October for the best Welcome Back celebration you’ve seen. It’s a great time to be a Member of MIYC!
