abound, and the young Christian student will read the work with profit. 224 pages; cloth; Scripture Press, Chicago, 111.; $3.00. R ich es of the K ingdom By Grace Noll Crowell These devotions for women center in a brief text which is elaborated in prose and poetry. A prayer concludes each of the twenty-five sections. The meditations are equally appropriate for men and women. 126 pages; cloth; Abingdon Press, New York; $1.50. R ible Readings T o r the Fam ily H our By Martin P. Simon The author is a minister of the Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) and founder and editor oi The Chris tian Parent and M y Chum. Here the reader has 365 devotional topics, one to a page, approximately 200 words each in length—-dated from January 1 to December 31. The topics are from both Old and New Testaments, and valuable suggestions are included as to methods in family devotions. Questions follow each day’s topic, and a suggested prayer concludes the page. The material is marked by appre ciation of the interest of children and loyalty to the Word of God. Moody Press admirers through the years will be surprised at some of the interpre tations— such as making the leaven in the meal in Jesus’ parable in Matthew 13:13 “ the Christians in this world” gradually extending the King dom of God in this world. Wisely used, this volume could revitalize family devotions. 368 pages; cloth; Moody Press, Chicago, 111.; $3.00. This book is remarkable, among other things, for the wide range of topics treated. The introduction an swers the question, “Who are the Jews?” and treats the land of Israel as to topography, plants and animals. Some 77 pages are devoted to a re sume of the Bible history of the Jewish people, including the narra tive from creation to Abraham. Many explanations of Jewish customs and habits illuminate the Scriptural rec ord. P ictoria l H is to r y o f the J ew ish P e o p le By Nathan Ausubel

Additional volumes of this remark able set, long out of print, continue to be issued by Baker Book House. The set consists of 57 volumes of some six to seven hundred pages each. Under each verse will be found many outlines and quotations from the great expositors. To own this set is to pos sess an expository library in minia ture. This volume covers the first seven chapters of the Gospel of John only. 674 pages; cloth; Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Mich.; $4.95. For many years the minister of St. George’s Free Church, now St. George’s West, Edinburgh, Scotland, and for a time before his death Prin cipal of New College, Dr. Alexander Whyte (1837-1921), one of the great est of modern Scottish preachers, left to the world a legacy of books—his own writings. To own one of these is to set one’s heart upon all the rest. The thirty-one books listed at the close of this volume have been reprinted again and again. The Treasury opens with a fore word by Clarence E. Macartney and a sermon by one of Whyte’s succes sors at Free St. George’s, Dr. John Kelman, at the time of Whyte’s death —a fine appreciation. Twenty-eight selections from Whyte’s works have been gathered by the editor, and in addition a sermon, “ One Thing Thou Lackest,” from an unpublished manu script. This volume will prove an excellent introduction to Alexander Whyte, a great gospel preacher. 256 pages; cloth; Fleming H. Revell Com pany, Westwood, N.J.; $2.50. The G rea tn ess and Grace o f God By Clarence H. Benson The author has long been known for his contributions to the growing conservative Chr i s t i an Education movement. A member of the Bar nard Astronomical Society and the Royal Astronomical Society of Can ada, he maintains a private observa tory at Maitland, Florida. A study of the spacial universe is used as a basis for instruction in Christian evi dences. Review questions conclude each chapter.
