by Arnold D. Ehlert, Th.D. Librorian and Professor of Library Science, Biola Practical Christian Ethics By C. B. Eavey This is a companion volume to the author’s P r i n c i p l e s of Christian Ethics. In that volume he sought to establish the theoretical basis for right conduct and in this one he examines the practical outworking of these principles. In twelve chapters he tackles the major concerns of human conduct and seeks to relate the Chris tian Gospel and teaching to each. Duty toward God, to others, and to oneself is outlined with specific atten tion to Scriptural counsel and exhor tation. An interesting chapter deals with our duty to nature, in which we are exhorted to learn of her first of all. We are then to use, but not to abuse her, and thus “ discharge the obligation we owe to nature and to God.” (p. 107). As might be expected, the author looks into the matters of sex, family, love, and community obligations. Social and political matters are not neglected. The book is designed as a study text and has questions following each chapter. Dr. Eavey is Chairman of the Department of Education and Psychology at Wheaton College. 240 pages; cloth; Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids; $3.95. Man's Firsi Love: The Great1 Commandment By Ralph W . Sockman Taking the first commandment as the subject for development in this book, the author treats each section of the famous formula in the framework of religious psychology and Christian life. Love toward God should be above love toward parents or even between man and wife. This love cannot be realized within oneself, but comes as a response to God’s love “ because He first loved us.” Dr. Sockman speaks of conversion and speaks of the family aspect of love, but one wishes he had gone to the basic root of the matter and expounded the new birth by which sinners enter into God’s family and fully realize His love as expressed in Jesus Christ and His redemption. Despite this there are many helpful things in this book, many of which have been drawn from wide reading. 211 pages; cloth; Doubleday & Com pany, New York; $2.95.
