This is the second volume to appear in the new Evangelical Commentary series edited by George Allen Turner and a board of some two dozen schol ars. The entire set is scheduled to run to forty volumes. Patterned somewhat after the Abingdon Interpreter’s Bible commentary in form, it is thoroughly evangelical in the sense of the Evan gelical Revival of the 18th century, but it is currently up to date in recog nition of recent advances in Biblical studies and archaeological data. Bibli ographic references are extensive. Each book has a general introduc tion and presents the text in the American standard version with exe gesis and exposition. The Greek is transliterated. The exposition presents an outline with considerable develop ment. Literary quotations appearing fairly frequently make the material more varied and the general usefulness of these volumes will be quite consid erable. It should prove a very useful tool to the pastor and lay teacher of the Bible, 435 pages; cloth; Zon- dervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids; $6.95. Preaching Through the Bible By Joseph Parker Most of the homiletical sets of com mentaries have been reissued in re cent years. Parker’s People’s Bible, of which this is the reissue, has long been a standard item of many pastors’ libraries. It is not in reality a com mentary, but a series of expositions covering only preachable passages. As such, it will furnish help in most cases where it is consulted. Each mes sage is prefaced by the prayer that Dr. Parker used with it. The fact that the material is in Biblical order makes it easy to consult. The set contains over 2,000 sermons. There are over 11,000 pages. The publisher proposes to issue one or two a month and to complete the set by July, 1961. 28 vols.; cloth; Baker Book House, Grand Rapids; $3.50 ea. (vols. 17 and 18 free to sub scribers for the set). BOOK ENDS TIPS ON HOW TO BE TOPS by Don W. Hillls. 48 pages; paper; Cowman Publications, Los Angeles; 50c. This is a manual of advice to the prospective missionary, and few could give better advice. CHAMPION OF GENEVA, A SKETCH OF JOHN CALVIN FOR YOUNG PEOPLE by Peter De Rover. 32 pages; paper; Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. C o ; 35c. BETWEEN GOD AND SATAN by Helmut Thie- licke. 84 pages; cloth; Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co., Grand Rapids; $2.00. The three-fold temptation of Jesus in the wilderness is the theme of these devotional, yet deeply penetrat ing, studies by the professor of systematic the ology at the University of Hamburg. This pic turesque language creates a vividness that il luminates this important chapter in the life of our Lord.
